Wagner leaves the team

Bryan Wagner

The Arizona Wildcats have been accustomed to having depth issues at linebacker and this year appears to be no different. The Wildcats will be down at least one linebacker and maybe two.

Senior transfer Brian Wagner has left the Wildcat football team. He told TucsonCitizen.com’s Anthony Gimino that “I don’t have love for the game anymore.”

Rumors of Wagner’s departure actually surfaced earlier in the week, but the rumors were denied by several sources. Since then Wagner informed the staff that he was not going to play football for the Wildcats and may be done with the sport for good.

“I think I’m done with football,” he also told Gimino.

Wagner transferred from Akron to Arizona and was eligible to play immediately since he had already earned his undergraduate degree. He was one of the nation’s top tacklers a year ago and was expected to start for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats could be down another linebacker, at least for the time being. Senior David Lopez was not on the team's on-line roster and there have been some rumors about his status on the team. The roster was recently updated with freshmen being assigned jersey numbers and it was indicated that Lopez's absence was not due to an oversite or error.
