Fischer wins award

Jake Fischer

Jake Fischer's return to college football after missing a year with an ACL injury could not have gone much better. For his efforts in Arizona's 24-17 win over Toledo, the junior from Ironwood Ridge was named PAC-12 Defensive Player Of The Week.

Fischer collected a career and game-high 13 tackles, with 2.5 of those tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

"It's an honor but there are so many things I could have done better," Fischer said.

Fischer made his first start since tearing his ACL in the spring of 2011.

“It was very emotional," Fisher admitted. "These guys and my family know what I went through and how hard I pushed to get back. The first play was emotional but I had to push it out of my mind and do my job.”

Fischer is the most experienced linebacker and was the only healthy linebacker    with any experience at the position who was available last week. Both Rob Hankins and Hank Hobson were injured. Fischer started with walk -on SirThomas Jackson and converted safety Marquis Flowers.
