It was a good day for the Arizona baseball team. First they were chosen to host a regional, then the won the PAC-12.
The NCAA Division I Baseball Committee on Sunday announced that Hi Corbett Field will host the Tucson Regional as one of 16 regional sites for the 66th annual Division I Baseball Championship. The announcement marks the first time the University of Arizona baseball program has hosted an NCAA Baseball Regional since 1992.
Sunday’s announcement also makes official the school’s third-straight postseason appearance and the eighth in the last 10 seasons under head coach Andy Lopez. The 2012 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship 64-team field, with first-round regional pairings and site assignments, will be revealed in a live, one-hour telecast on ESPNU at 9 a.m. (MST), Monday, May 28.
Arizona saw a six-run lead over its in-state rival and 16th-ranked Arizona State evaporate into a 7-7 tie ballgame in the ninth inning before Johnny Field roped a line drive walk-off single to left field that gave the Wildcats a thrilling 8-7 victory over the Sun Devils.
The win secured not only a conference series victory against ASU for the first time since 2008, but also the season series against the rivals from the north.
And with it all, the Wildcats captured a share of the Pac-12 Championship, the school's first league title since 1992. Not a bad way to end the regular season.
