Brandon Ashley

Brandon Ashley got the start in the Bahamas.

The University of Arizona men’s basketball team placed eight players in double figures Saturday in racing to a 136-66 exhibition win over the Real Deal Shockers at Kendal G.L. Isaacs Gymnasium.

The Wildcats, playing its first of two games on its current tour of the Bahamas, connected on 14-of-22 (.640) shots in the first quarter and jumped out to a 38-17 lead in the opening period.

After missing its first three shots, a Brandon Ashley field goal at the 9:42 mark started a run that saw Arizona make 11 consecutive field goals and hold a 26-9 advantage. Kevin Parrom and Nick Johnson were key early on, combining for 17 first-quarter points on 6-of-10 shooting.

The contest wasn’t close from that point, as the Wildcats dominated in every statistical category. In addition to UA’s 136 points and 64 percent shooting (54-of-85), the Cats outrebounded Real Deal, 54-26, collected 32 assists and limited the opposition to just 30 percent shooting (23-of-76). UA also made 16-of-30 attempts (.530) from three-point range.

Parrom led all scorers with 21 points, while Mark Lyons added 18 points and Solomon Hill chipped in with 17. Johnson contributed 13 points, eight rebounds and a game-high six steals. Ashley added 14 points and 10 rebounds for good measure.

Arizona built a 68-28 lead at the half, closing the first half with a 15-2 run over the last 4:24 to all but end things. First-year players Lyons, Ashley and Kaleb Tarczewski combined for 13 points in the run.

In addition to its shooting, Arizona moved the ball well, collecting those 32 assists on 54 made field goals. Of the 11 Wildcats to see action Saturday, 10 collected at least one assist.

    • Coach must feel like a kid in a candy store with his roster. What variables. What matchup problems this team can cause.

      CJMorales

    • Is there a reason Hill did not start? OR was Miller just playing with things?

    • Any word on how Gabe York played??

    • Here's the box score Chino.

Big issue - Nick Johnson still hasn't found his shot. However, with 8 assists, maybe he's found his calling at point.
Small issue - no blocks for Zeus or Jarrett.

    • 17 turnovers would be a problem as well against this competition except 10 of them were by our 3 freshmen bigs.

      bpwildcat

    • and the 4 PFs on Chol and Jarrett.

Still I could look at those stat lines all season long. Incredible.

Except with PAC 12 refs 4 fouls in a game like this equals fouling out before opening tip.

I thought these stats were interesting: nick had 6 steals and Gabe took 9 shots in 13 minutes, highest shooting rate on the team. I'm guessing he was playing the 2 guard.

    • "first of two games on it's current tour of the Bahama's"... we're only playing two games on the entire road trip?

      wineknow

    • Yeh, I thought it was four games myself...

      TewaWildcaT

    • I thought I read 3 games in 5 days. See what happens when the media is shut out. peace

      bpwildcat

    • OK, I get that they are having a nice trip and working out and bonding and all of that is valuable. But two damn games in 5 days is ridiculous. Frankly, four games would be silly. Play in tournament, play at least 5 different teams, but 10 would be better but why even make the trip if your going to play 2 games and play a team that basically couldn't beat the WSR all-stars on a good day. I don't get it.

10 extra practice sessions, 2 months before real practice starts. Normally very valuable. Trying to integrate 4 freshmen, 3 transfers and a priority walk on - this year it's priceless.

Sure, but why not go to Australia or Europe and play 10 or 15 games?

30ish people...20 hotel rooms, 5 days at Atlantis with a great deal... $15,000. Food $50 per day per person? $7500. Airfare basically a wash - if you've been to the Bahamas you know it's an expensive ticket to get there. $30,000.00. This is easily a $50,000.00 or $60,000.00 trip. Spend $75K and get more experience.

I just think for a few thousand $'s more.... they might have found some real competition and gotten more game experience PLUS experienced all the 'priceless' stuff.

    • I for one am not worried about how long they play or who they play. Hell, football hasn't even started yet but AZ is already practicing and playing. This will ultimately be beneficial to the team and I can't wait to see when it all comes together.

    • Wathching the short video and observing that TARC is not a s fast as our PG.
: )) He runs the floor just fine, doesnt look clumsy at all. Especially compared to out last center....forgot his name already.
I see TARC as the starter...not CHOL. He is just toooo big , fills up the center, has fast moves. Cant wait for first game.
Can we jump past FB season?

Yes they cpoul...if you and I play we would lose

    • OK, there is something I just don't get about the over seas trips....why on earth are the programs spending so much cash to not play any games? UCLA went or is going or is in China and they are scheduled to play 3 games. Seems like a huge waste of time and effort - if you just want to bond, rent a cabin in Tahoe and sing kumbaya around a camp fire.

If you go overseas to play some ball... play some ball. Play two games per day and split the squad up... get some real experience for the players. Well at least UCLA won;t have the benefit if integrating Shabazz and only a 1 game advantage over us.

Didn't we play like 10 or 15 game in Australia one year? Seems like the star reported on that trip for two solid weeks and there were new scores and different teams/different cities every day. Anyone recall?

    • Maybe if they leave the country they can practice the hell out of them with no ncaa restrications or atleast no one is watching.

    • The trips have to remain within NCAA rules, no matter where they go.
But that isn't the point. The point is, that the team develops, and a trip featuring 10 solid practice sessions way early, to get the 8 or so new players oriented, is perfectly planned.

Besides, I think Coach Miller is far more qualified to arrange his basketball trips than any of us. I love our opinions, but that doesn't make them any less funny sometimes....hoops

I have no problem with people questioning things that the basketball team does. I think it makes for interesting discussions and comments... That being said, i think these trips are great, and it really doesn't matter how many games are played. Its ALL about the extra practice sessions and the team bonding. Working out some early jitters (guys playing in their first games while wearing an Arizona jersey) is an added benefit.

Its also good for the guys to get a road trip out of the way... to see what the coaching staff's expectations are and how the team operates on a travel schedule... and in the case of UCLA, the students get to travel through China. I think that's awesome, regardless of how many games they get to play.
