Evaluating Cats through 3 Games

Mark Lyons

Mark Lyons has done an excellent job stepping into a leadership role at Arizona. His previous experience and toughness will guide the Cats this season.

General thoughts and evaluation on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Sean Miller has a bright season ahead of him with all this talent.

    • I'm revising my pre-season prediction.

Based on what I've seen, I think Arizona goes 12-0 in the OOC schedule. I have them at 15-3 in conference, but I'm optimistic they could better that mark.

Lyons holds them together, and every second on the floor is precious for everyone. That has elevated everyone's game.

      Monster team in the making.

Also, since we're talking about screens, offensively, Arizona's ball handlers need to do a much better job in "allowing the screener to set". I think Lyons right now is the best at being patient during the screening process. However, several others are attacking with the dribble as the screen is being set, which in a tightly officiated game could lead to some unnecessary fouls on our big men getting caught for a moving screen. The foul is on the big men, but it's usually the ball handlers fault for starting to move while the big is still moving. Second, by allowing the screen to be properly set, the screen becomes that much more effective.

Boom. This is what frustrates me more then anything on the offensive side of things. You HAVE to wait for the pick to be set. It gets our big men silly fouls. Solo is the the one I've seen time and time again attack before its set.

      Great article as usual Mike.

    • Lyons, Johnson, Mayes...of these three, only Lyons has looked solid when dribbling into the paint. And even he had some dumb "where are you going" turnovers in the lane against LBSU. Choosing our spots with the dribble drive, and hitting the open man or putting up a shot before it's one dribble too late will lead to a lot of easy buckets and free throws, opposed to steals and charges. I'm sure Miller will get them there.

PS - what ever happend to the jump stop?

Agreed. So many charges are called when the player could've easily pulled up for the short jumper Sure attack the rim, but know when to pull up too.
