Cats land 5-star Jackson-Cartwright

Parker Jackson-Cartwright

Parker Jackson-Cartwright (right) has committed to the University of Arizona per his high school coach Jamal Adams.

Arizona lands 5-star point guard for Class of 2014.

    • Obviously this will leave Mudiay out of the equation for AZ, but do you think it will impact the Briscoe decision?

      bpwildcat

    • It shouldn't impact Briscoe's decision (Class of 2015), but you never know. Mudiay's interesting. Baylor is all over him. He does want to play PG in college and NBA, but he would make for one helluvah shooting guard IMO.

    • Nice work CSM! Keep UofA at the top of the recruiting world!

    • Now we need to bring in some wings and bigs to surround him with. This kid is gonna be a GREAT addition to the roster. Lear for a year as a backup... then hand him the reins. Great pickup for the Cats!

Agreed, with McConnell and PJC two seasons from now, that's a really good senior/freshman pure point guard duo that Miller can work with. Improved ball distribution for sure. PJC is an incredibly quick guy with the basketball in his hands. He also plays for a great HS coach (I actually played against him in high school) who really knows the game and how to develop perimeter players. PJC should be college ready basketball wise once he reaches Arizona. The big question will be how much stronger he can get in the next 2-4 seasons. He does have some nice basketball strength already for elite high school ball, but college strength is something he'll need to work on just like Gabe York, Jerrett and Ashley all need to continue to improve upon.

    • Quiet board tonight for some big news!

    • From Telep on P-Jack....or will it be PJC:

"Hopefully we can reel in Aaron Gordon or Justise Winslow or Justin Jackson, players like that," Jackson-Cartwright said. "I'd like some athletic wings and big men to play alongside of."

"With Mark Lyons having just one season of eligibility and Duquesne transfer T.J. McConnell having two beginning with the 2013-14 campaign, Arizona needed to land a point guard in the 2014 class."

    • 5'9" hmmm A little short...dont ya think?

      Mrzipityduda

    • zip, he's only an inch shorter then Stoudamire and Gardner were. I'd figure you'd be happy with his assists average - 7.9. That's what stood out to me. Nice pickup, hope this impacts the other recruits in a positive way for Arizona!

      TewaWildcaT

    • I am kidding. Turner and Mustafa were tall for PGs .....if this kid is anywhere near as good as Damon......that would be awesome

      Mrzipityduda

    • The program is rolling on the recruiting front that is for sure, great pickup! Are we still inline to get Eric Cooper jr.?

      liver97

    • As of now Eric Copper Jr. is coming to Arizona. He visited unoffically again a few weeks ago. Still, it is a long way until the summer of 2014.

    • The point guard recruiting "battle" for 2014 was an interesting one. We were considered the leaders for both Jordan Mclaughlin and PJC and were going to take whoever committed first. I personally like Jordan's game better but mostly because he's 6'0 and very explosive. Both are great pass-first points which is what Miller is dying for (especially this year). It will be interesting where Jordan lands but I hope it's not UCLA.

    • I agree that McLaughlin is the better prospect to play right away. The thing is PJC fits perfectly because we don't need him to play much as a freshman. TJ will get the bulk of the minutes at the 1 and if NJ is still around he will get spot minutes as well or those minutes will go to York. Once Rounds gets a hold of PJC I see him gaining the muscle he will need. The more I watch Miller develop players I think it is a lot to ask for a freshman to come in and play the 1 unless they are someone like Rose or Wall, which I do not see in the 2014 class at all. I am excited about the get and I think it also speaks to how much Miller has dominated Howland on the recruiting front for West Coast kids.

    • PJC and York in the same back court at the same time... in a few years, we're gonna be REALLY small along the perimeter. Could be fun to watch though... with all that speed.

Pitts at 6'5 will help. One thing I've seen from Miller's recruiting in the past two classes is an emphasis on more natural scorers. Perhaps even Miller is realizing that at least in the Pac-12, you need an offense as much as you need a solid defense. Jerrett, Ashley, Lyons, McConnell, York, Pitts and now PJC are all players with natural offensive skill sets, and all were better on offense compared to defense in high school.

If Miller can continue to recruit similar players while mixing in a Zeus, a Rondae Jefferson (both O and D, one of the hardest workers in the country), and a guy like Aaron Gordon (probably the hardest worker in his Class) we're going to see some really nice and balanced Arizona teams in the future.

    • I wonder if the new UMC merger included a technology for stretching. Sure would like to find a way to get him to at least 6'. I wonder how much Frodo paid MIller to get someone he can interview without a step stool?

I really do think that is what CSM is after - balance from all positions such that one or two key players having a bad night will not necessarily mean an L. Right now, if any two of Lyons, Hill, KP or Johnson are having a bad game, we tend to lose. Three of them playing well usually means a win, and with all four of them clicking (a rarity so far this year for sure), we are pretty much unbeatable.

I too like McLaughlin's game better, but he is much more of a score first PG than a pass-first PG. I think PJC will fit what miller wants to do a little more. I like the pickup and would have been happy with either of them. Now on to the wings (SG/SF) in 2014, plenty to choose from. Stanley Johnson,Justin Jackson, justise winslow, Namon Wright, Craig victor, Malik pope, Dwayne Morgan, Kameron Chatman, and Dorian Pickens. I'm sure I've missed some but all of those players have Arizona offers. Im ure they will try and get one big man too. Going to be exciting that is for sure.
