Cowboys are Comin' to Tucson

Matt Scott

Matt Scott and the Wildcats will have their hands full with #18 Oklahoma State.

Oklahoma State comes to Tucson with an 84-0 victory under their belts. Arizona will be hard pressed for an upset after a close win against Toledo.

    • I agree with you, Gary. The running backs will be key as well. But I have a feeling if Arizona can get a few stops early, OSU will quickly abandon them.

    • If by positive you mean a victory for Arizona, then I would have to agree with you. However, I would take it as a positive for Arizona to compete in the game and come out with confidence. However, I do agree that OSU is in a good place. They are an established program in a top BCS conference, nobody can complain about that.

    • Previous comments touch on a key- we need to seal the inside lanes against the run. I don't necessarily mean stop the run by the D-line, but they do need to channel the RBs to the outside where the LBs get better shots. I don't think Ok State can run our corners very well against this defense because of the 3-stack toward the edges.
We also need to turn the 'Cats loose...literally...against their freshman QB, and let them meet in the middle of his chest. Any freshman QB = one lost game (it's a rule)....so let's make it this one....by turnover, by mistake, however. We need to rattle him and rock him. We have Hobson and Pettinato back this week, and that helps.
Ok State has good corners, but they have seams-- I think we can throw on them for good yardage. When they switch on post-cover, they leave a gap....custom made for Buckner and Hill. I don't see their D-line as dominant as they were, and I see our OL as far better than last time, and in a different offense that I think Scott can run really well.

Three past losses don't mean a loss tomorrow....it's a new game and new day. That's the way players have to view it.

    • I liked Rich Rod's comments this week when talking about the Arizona OL. In short, he thought they played well, but also said they needed to play much more physical the way he knew they could.

The biggest problem for Arizona the past few losses to OSU wasn't necessarily the defense (although it was pretty horrendous). The real trouble was Arizona's inability to protect the pocket and give Foles time to throw down field. OSU stuffed our run, collapsed the pocket and basically played 8 in the box to further stifle Arizona's quick-hit passing game.

Improved OL play from Arizona, in RR's new and more balanced offense could at least help Arizona get on the board earlier and more often and just keep the game in doubt heading into the fourth quarter. If that occurs than anything could happen; and if the Zona Zoo stays until the final whistle maybe they'll get treated to a little field trampling.

    • You just hit on a major key there, Gary, the Zona Zoo. Some of us are acting like OSU is bigger, stronger and faster than USC and I'm sorry, I just can't see that. No way do we have as far to go in 2012 as we did in Stoops' first year when we played a Wisconsin team ranked higher than OSU is now. What it comes down to is that the crowd has to create an intimidating climate and then, as Lee Corso says, funny things happen in the Tucson desert at night.

Yes, and despite some outcry from fans trying to defend the exodus, internal sourcing has mentioned that "it would be nice" to see the fans stay and fuel the players throughout the game.

    • No doubt on paper OSU should win this game. They do have better overall players and recent history on their side...

BUT... This time, we will not be out coached, RR and Casteel will have us ready to strap it on and they will provide the motivation and the game plan that if we execute and avoid disastrous TO's, will put us in great position to hang close and maybe even pull out the win...

Win or lose this game seems to be setting itself up to be either a reaffirmation that AZ FB sucks and will continue to suck...

OR... it will be clear evidence that the program is about to awaken and become the sleeping giant RR must think it is or he would not of taken the job in the first place...

I believe it to be the latter... I believe we can keep it close and have a realistic chance to pull it out... We will need great effort, win the TO battle and the Zoo will need to play a part too...

RR has to know that this is THE game, on our schedule this year, where we have a real chance to make a statement against a name team to establish AZ as an up and coming program... Victories over USC and Oregon are not as likely to be as obtainable... The time for a program changing win is NOW...

      You just gotta believe...
