7-on-7 has a new look

My, oh, my how 7-on-7 summer football has changed in recent years.

    Canyon

  • Pretty well-timed article, Canyon, considering "The Opening" was televised on ESPNU for all three days.

I do like the fact that the event(s) have become more media friendly than in the past because it's impossible to cover every kid during the season (being their live) so it's a nice gathering to evaluate talent as a whole. However, you raise an interesting point that basketball has been trying to cope with in that the tournament organizers always seem to be one step ahead of the NCAA and you just don't always know what's happening behind the scenes with these athletes, what they're receiving, who is in their ear, etc.

  • I think that another problem is the lack of control of summer leagues. People think of summer hoops as AAU but AAU really only runs a small percentage of the summer tournaments. There is no governing body and the NCAA can only do so much after the fact.

    Canyon

  • The "voluntary" summer 7-7s have degenerated into "sponsored events" and here we go-- if events are sponsored, there must be rules, but I don't see many so far. What I see is schools like Oregon getting a determinate advantage with individual recruits. Some of it can be very subtle, for example: all of the jerseys or t-shirt giveaways are emerald green... or all of the gear donated by Nike for the tournament is all sweaty after the event, so "go ahead and keep it kid"...to the tune of $6-$800, which if done by a university, would be a big violation.

Who gets access to the kids? Almost anyone, and it's pretty unlimited, and uncontrolled.

    Not good.

  • Just pay the kids already. I know where they can go to keep their taxes low. cool

  • Not sure if anyone read this article, recently, but it goes to show how long it takes the NCAA to come to grips and catch up to what's happening on the circuit.

As discussed in a previous post, only "NCAA Certified" events are governed strictly by the NCAA and even then the rules are pretty loose. In basketball terms, these are events where the college coaches are allowed to "view" players, such as Peach Jam, Adidas Super 64, Fab 48, etc.

The next coaching evaluation period begins tomorrow July 10. The four teams in the article below will be banned from these evaluation events.

  • Well well, none of them must be held in the state of Arizona. Sure sounds like some bitter grapes to me!

I also missed the corresponding article following USC's Rising Star's Camp.

  • I may be mistaken, but I believe players have to pay their own way to Rising Stars camp but for The Opening and events like it (All-Star Games, the 7-on-7 event at Disney World) are able to pay a player's way. There is an All-Star game in Phoenix now, and it could wind up helping Arizona and Arizona State's recruiting efforts.

  • Not sour grapes at all! Just stating facts that in a few years the NCAA will find a problem and penalize the players and schools because of the things they get. AZ got hit beacuse of an AAU tounry a few years ago and others will get hit unless the NCAA is not pro active instead of reactive.

All of 'The Opening' attendees also pay for their own way to the qualifiers around the country. It is not just a 7 on 7 camp. Nor is it held for the benefit of The University of Oregon. As a supposed representative of the media and part of a network that I support with my membership I would hope that a little more research and facts be introduced into your pure opinion piece! It is quite the disservice.

  • Stop being a douche...he made an opinion on a message board off the top of his head and qualified it. He didn't write the article. If you don't like it, don't read it or drop your subscription moron. Just because you subscribe doesn't give you any say on content or opinions on a public message board.

What would you expect from a duck. Nike's money runs deep and they never see a problem with that. They see no wrong with uncle Phil. He might be the second coming of JoePA for them.

  • Duck fans a little touchy tonight? The article in no way mentions Oregon, alludes to any impropriety by Oregon, Phil Night, Nike, etc. It does point out that high school football is going the way of high school basketball, and if you think high school summer basketball is not on shady ground than I've got a bridge for you I'd like to sell.

The hostility almost leads me to believe that Oregon does have something to hide. It's like a cheating boyfriend accusing his girlfriend of cheating on him to change the conversation. Rather than be defensive you go on the offensive attack, or should I say quack attack.

    Direct quote from the post.

"Nike hosted an event this past weekend at their headquarters in Oregon called “The Opening”. The top players from around the country showed up. We all know about Phil Knight and his generous loyalty to the Oregon Ducks. So, you can’t tell me that in many ways this camp doesn’t benefit Oregon.

Is Nike an extension of Oregon? What would happen if Artie Moreno or Jim Click flew out the best players to Tucson and gave them a bunch of swag, treated them like God’s and oh yeah let them throw around the ball. Is that fair and legal?"

Huh? What? Does not mention Oregon? You really trying to tell me that is not accusatory or inflammatory? Really?

Sorry about the quack attack line.

  • It states facts. Does Phil and the ducks not have a relationship? Is there not loyalty to each other? Your basketball cour/arenat is named after his son is it not? Do they not have a locker in the football locker room for Phil? Hmmmm that would say alot of loyalty and a relationship. Having the top recruits come to the state of Oregon does not help them out at all huh? If i were a top recruit and Oregon was looking at me i might take an unoffcail since i am in the area. So not a single player at "the opening" took an unofficial while up there?

Sounds like Phil helping out a bit to me. But again NCAA says nothing wrong with it so what do you care.
