Are Wildcat fans prepared?

  • I have a novel idea. Let's see what the season brings.
And, as long as Coach Rod wears our colors, he has my support.
I think he's on a great path so far.

As for his first recruiting class, I am not really concerned about the rankings because the guys that rank HS players by and large haven't coached a down of football in their lives. Tomey got some guys that no one had on their radar screen, some diamonds in the rough, guys that liked to hit, overlooked players like Rob Waldrop, Keith Smith, who probably wouldn't be recruited to play QB today or even then because he was too short, and a host of other unknowns. He ended up being making Arizona the 2nd winningest program in the Pac 10 in the nineties with a bunch of castoffs and only a few 4 star players. There is a lot more to football than stars.

This team has some players with talent that were discovered in the second half of the season, and with all the disruption of last year, and a new coach everything is an unknown. If they play hard and look like they know what they're doing on both sides of the ball, I'll be satisfied. With a coach of this stature, the new facilities finally in place, Arizona should be in position to compete for a Pac 12 title in two more seasons.

Correct and even comparing recruiting with ASU is not realistic since because Erikson often went the JC route, his successor has been forced to do the same, and recruiting JC players en masse doesn't work out well in the long run.

We do know for certain that Arizona has never had so many early recruits, so the 2013 class should be wrapped up very early.

The comparison is perfectly valid on the field. Next year it won't matter where they were last year or where they are from, just how ready they are to play.
I am excited about the early commits for the next class.... Can't wait to see them start contributing... In 2014-2015.

Rich Rod wins the OKS-U and ASU games....IMNSHO, his honeymoon will continue. If that were to happen, a sensibility will emerge that he can do it.

If he beats USC in Tucson.....the Southern Arizona hysteria will rise to "Smithsonian" levels and the national press will firmly take notice.

Oklahoma st I don't expect a win but unclassified, Oregon st, ASU, BYU, Colorado are all teams that the cats this year are compairable with that and Toledo and South Carolina St should be games that our wins will come from if they grab anything outside of that it is a huge success but I beloved at the end of the year the wins will be from those teams. I expect to improve I say three years bc that will give RR frosh class to show what they will be. I would like more stars but like the baseball team if they play hard buy in and pull the same way they can should marketable improvement. I am not saying bcs in three years but a very competetive team.

  • It's going to be a roller coaster of a season, which is why I wrote this article in the first place. Thanks so much for all the input, gang. Bear Down on that one.

I could see Arizona winning games we should lose and losing games we should win this season, which will keep things exciting. It's never easy for a new coach to work with a former coach's athletes, especially considering how dramatic the coaching philosophies and schemes will be under Rich Rod compared to Stoops.

In a way I won't be surprised by anything this year, but that's not to see Wildcat fans won't have both good and bad surprises. One thing that would help is Arizona's "luck" changing under Rich Rod. We can all debate the good, bad and ugly of the Stoops Era, but one thing we can all agree on was that Arizona had BAD LUCK under Stoops.

  • I think 8 wins (before bowl) is the minimum acceptable standard this year. 5th year Senior QB with experience in this offense, facilities upgrade and honeymoon season with the fans with 8 home games just has to be at least 8 wins.

  • Many very good comments here, and many good points made.
It's so hard for a football couch-potato to separate their real football knowledge (whatever level it might be) from their emotions. The tendency upon a bad game is to react- the coach is a jerk, the QB should be hanged, the etc.... But the truth is always a lot different, and I think (maybe I'm hoping) that our Arizona fans are understanding enough that we can put aside some of the knee-jerk trash of the past.

Gary and Steve as others, are perfectly correct- we should really take the good with the bad this year and at least most of next; because we are going to be up and down, we may blow a 20-point lead, we may come back on someone when we're down by 20, we may blow someone out that we have no rational right to blow out, and we could lose to almost anyone. The roller-coaster will definitely run regularly with our team. It happens to every rebuilding team on the way up.

I know it's the monsoon, I know I'm getting the itch, I know the new turf has been laid down in the stadium, and I know we're getting closer. :)

Bermuda is quite a bit different than cool grass varieties in that it grows best in hot, humid conditions, which is right now in Tucson. And the warm nights help Bermuda thrive.

The monsoons will certainly help as it will inject a lot of nitrogen into the rain, helping it green up nicely.

  • In watching the site web-cam, it's already greening up and growing together. It will be very nice by game day....fast track though, because the bermuda roots won't be thick and heavy.

That is crazy if they get eight wins that is over exceeding. USC WASH STANFORD OREGON AND OKLA ST. Are all loses unless something crazy happens that would mean games we should be in we would win seven games and there are at least one or two that you don't win. I am thinking 5-6 is a good number and would be huge I would not be surprised if it is less wins. Come three years in we should be rolling. I say offensively they will average about 28-30 points a game for the season but with the defense I don't think they will be able to stop the top teams. I eight I would go crazy six and a bowl I would be happy anything lower not surprised with the lack of defensive players.

  • I'm just scratching the itch here...

My expectations are high but my acceptable baseline is low. Any improvement on last season is trending upward so I'm fine with 5-7 (are you reading this wineknow? 5 and frigging 7 is acceptable!!!).

However, as most are aware on this board, my uncanny "Carnac-ian" ability to pick the winners based on last season pick-em contest results (hold on...can't type...hold on) leaves me with nothing left to lose than to predict 8 and 4. Following a trend, Cats can take a game that no one in their right mind would expect. Washington and Stanford are suspect, but we have played USC and Oregon tough in the past.

    So here we go:

We win all the home games with the exception of OSU (Oklahoma State in this case - they just have our number). This includes the likes of USC and Washington. A tall order indeed but once again we are in the over-looked category, even with the media-hype on Rich Rod, and we may not see their best shot.

We lose all the road games with the exception of UCLA.

This leaves us at 8 and 4 with losses to OSU, Oregon, Stanford, and Utah.

Of course my pick-ems will probably reflect 12-0 for the Cats.

  • 5-7 ..... Not acceptable. Ever, under any circumstances. HOWEVER, you will not hear me complain about the coaches unless they make obvious blunders that cost us games. It's only fair to give them a chance, and even 1 year is not enough, they need 3 or 4.

My frustration is at the apparent lack of big time recruits, which I assumed with RR wold be a given. I was wrong and I think it's a legit concern that the second or third best coach in the league lands a last place class.

  • I think Rich Rod is a good bet there at Arizona. At Michigan the establishment never wanted him there to begin with as he had to fight both the battle against the other teams along with opponents from within. The negativity from the boosters absolutely hurt the chances at anything good happening. Rich Rod did make a few critical mistakes along the way as well. A 3-3-5 scheme will never work in the Big Ten and Rich Rod forced this scheme upon a 4-3 for life defensive coord. Rich Rod also underestimated the need for size in the Big Ten. A small fast team may win a one game situation against a big ten team but through the course of a season that philosophy gets beat into submission playing big ten teams every week. If he learns from his mistakes and learns how to adapt his plans he can be a success.

  • I don't have a base line for what I expect in terms of acceptability for wins and losses. I do have for what I expect in terms of hitting and physical play. From my WV friend who lived the RR years at WVU and from what I've heard about spring ball I think we'll see major improvement on that front. For a guy who built his rep on defense, Stoops' teams over the past few years seemed to really fall off in that regard.

That's why, although I don't demand a 6 or 7 win year as acceptable, I would not be surprised if this team goes at least 8-4. Guys like Carey, Jenkins, Scott, Morrison et al make the changeover in scheme much less dramatic on offense. And we showed how much tougher we could play even under Kish last year in tempe. I cannot see us losing to UW in Tucson. I cannot see us losing to Ok St. in Tucson. We have usually played fairly well against USC, especially in LA, but if we are that much more physical, we'll see how it goes at home this year. RR has already put in place the underlying thematics about tempe state so I personally think that will be a big win at home. What we've got to do is take care of the supposed walk-overs; ie: Toledo, which has been a problem in the past for RR at Michigan and for Arizona under Stoops (UNM). I do think we beat Toledo and I think we get Ore. State and have a flat out shoot out with ucla. They have to be geared up for us after we've beaten them how many years in a row, now? Especially beating them like a drum last year. I do think they will be much better prepared with that staff under Mora and I think all my predictions I always made about New weasel proved out. He does not coach a physical game. As I said many times, Gary Barnett at Colorado said in his book it took him two years to toughen up the Buffs he inherited from the Weaze.

One thing it will be is fun and I do like the recruiting job RR's coaching staff has done for 13. I love Solomon and Cox; Grant, Holiday and all the speed smurfs as well as the LBs. You watch guys like Turituri on tape and I could care less how many stars he has, that kid is an assassin.

  • I do still believe Rich Rod can be a good coach. The terrible roster he inherited at Michigan also had much to do with his failures. The fan base has to be united behind a coach and at Michigan that never happened. The first season, 3-9 absolutely killed the recruiting of top talent and made it look like Michigan would be much worse but the roster was just terrible that year. Rich Rod will thrive in a place where he has to work his way from the bottom up. He does recruit good kids as evident of how they accepted the new coach, Brady Hoke and how many of them were contributors on last seasons 11-2 team. Nothing says more about the players than how they respond to a new coach stepping in. When Rich Rod arrived the players attitudes were terrible and there was a mass attrition and entitlement mentality. I blame the prior coaching staff for those problems. Walking into a program used to winning with a depleted roster full of division 2 talent and a fan base expecting immediate improvement is a death sentence for any coach. This job in Arizona is a good fit.

    Blue,

I'm guessing by your star rating of 39 that you have expressed these sentiments on the Michigan board a couple of times?

    lol

Thanks for pulling for our coach. We are "fairly-biased" down here in the desert but most of the fan-base will give him a chance to build. Pull for us in the Pac-12.

Blue, thanks for the clarification of the roster inherited by RR.

After all that was essentially the team that was waxed, at home, by Appalachian State, the previous season.
