Bear Down Hugs On The Way?

  • As construction nears its completion on the end zone project - in terms of the turf - it is pretty self evident that the North End Zone is very close to the stands.

Thus I am wondering how long it will take for the players to fling themselves on purpose to the students awaiting them a la the Packers at Lombardi..................it looks to me like it has all the proper math for this to take place on a regular basis.

I know I have seen players get hugs before from the crowd along the North End Zone, but now it has all the makings for an organized event of sorts...........which brings up one worry isn't there a rule against 'over the top' celebrations after touchdowns? It will be interesting to see how this plays out and if the refs try to put an end to it quickly if it should 'escalate'.

As a Bears fan I have to say I really hate when I see the Packers launching themselves into the crowd. However as a Wildcats fan I think I would actually like to see it if it is my team doing the scoring and celebrating with the home crowd.

  • wato, you express what I have thought. In fact, because of the new seating installations, both end zones are now closer to the end lines, and it will be very possible for a player to launch himself into the bottom row at either end with ease.

I suspect though, that most players upon scoring, will just slap some hands as they cruise by, as part of the celebration. Either way, I don't view it as a bad thing, as long as it remains controlled and doesn't become an "excessive" display, which could cost us.

Coaches will be very wary of any such displays, as well as injury potential, and as part of game-management prior to any game these things will be gone over in the Thursday-Friday walk-throughs. Also during practices, RBs and receivers will be shown the best angles to take, how to guage proximity to the railings, and how to use the crash-pads in the end zones. No one wants a player hurt, or for that matter, an overeager fan who wants to try "participating" instead of behaving and just watching the game.

A "Wildcat Wrestle" would be fun to see......within limits. rockon

  • And the first time the resulting penalty and ejection of the player costs us a game the practice will stop, when you score hand the ball to the ref and go back to your bench for celebration. Other types of celebration are taunting and should not be tolerated.

  • The NCAA needs to ban the celebration rule, entirely, but as jjones points out until they do (and they won't) the first time an Arizona player makes contact with anyone in the stands the flag will be thrown, Rich Rod will yell at his player, and it won't happen again.

  • I want to meet the player that can launch himself into the north endzone. As he should be in the olympics as a high jumper or pole vaulter. When watching it got up they needed good size ladders just to reach the bottom on the wall. I am guessing 8' to the bottom so atleast 10 to the top. That would mean the juy can jump from the floor and sit on the rim. Not sure that will happen. And on the south endzone it is actually a little further back then where the knothole was but same height so if it did nto happen before it will not happen now.

As for the celebration i think hate the fact that they do not let the kids get excited. It is an emotional game and when you score you get excited. Let them have some fun with their teammates!! I never understood that. If the other team does not like it then do not let them score then they will not be celebrating. Seems simple.

  • Colorado, here's a guy that could jump into that NEZ. Check out this vertical from Jiwan James of the Reading Philies AA team. What a jump and catch but I'm not sure he didn't just have a spare ball in his pocket since he lost his glove in the process. Watch closely:

  • Ricky,
It looks to me like the player in the baseball video used the wall by literally climbing it by putting a cleat into it and then lifting himself up into air. Nice play but not as great as it appears.
You may disagree with me, but I have seen guys climbing outfield walls to catch fly balls for decades. It seems to me in this age of video cameras 'on' every where we seem to think we are watching things not done before...........

ESPN has turned catching a ball with your glove over the fence into the new slam dunk of baseball, but I am here to say guys have been doing this for a long time and frankly they are supposed to go up and go get the ball.
I love baseball but just as much as we seem to see fantastic plays we also see the pros making little league plays.........the LA relief pitcher having his back turned while the Padres stole home and than added to the Dodgers woes by scoring another on the same play as the pitcher and catcher took turns looking like Tom and Jerry.

I know this is a football thread btw, one that I started in fact, and while I agree with the act like you have been there refrain, there also might be some 'spontaneous' jumping into the stands imo when it comes down to players on Arizona looking for a way to 'soften' their crash landing into the wall. And btw if there are any Packer fans out there I think some of them will agree that the wall at Lombardi is actually pretty high too and that players climb the wall for the most part and get lifted up into the stands by the cheeseheads.

Having said that I would like to see one of our guys 'have to' jump as he approaches the wall to 'soften' his impact and be lifted up by about ten sorority girls.........that would be quite a greeting. And as long as it is a 'non celebration' but an act of protecting yourself from the force of the wall the refs may have to look the other way..............and someone should be filming obviously.

  • I don't know if any of our guys will be jumping into the stands during games but if RR follows his practice at Michigan, if or after the Wildcats win they will gather in front of the Zona Zoo and serenade them with a round of Bear Down Arizona!

Wato, to me, the whole story about that Phillies' catch is the fast hands the James kid must have. He'd be a terror in a boxing ring.

  • Ricky,
No doubt about the hand and eye coordination...........

As for the singing to the crowd perhaps you have made the biggest point of all because that just may be the most likely scenario.
    Thanks,
