C'mon.....does anyone in Tucson even offer chicken and waffles? Does Rich Rod stand a chance to raid the southestern corner of this country without such fare?

There is a direct correlation between the closing of Greasy Tony's and the demise of our football program!

  • A verrrry good observation Wineknow.

  • Maye's Counter has chicken and waffles. Not the best I've ever had, but solid. The place is 5 minutes from campus.

  • Yes there is a chicken and waffles place. I forget the name but it is on speedway not too far from campus.

    Wildcat_Brad

  • I'd put a higher premium on the Sonoran hot dogs as evidenced by the basketball College Gameday last week.

  • I've never understood the whole chicken waffle thing, last time I ordered it had buffalo sauce all over it and it was crappy. I like Dutch style waffles dipped in icing or hot fudge.

  • Chick-Fil-A (referenced by the story) does chicken sandwiches and waffle FRIES. To their credit, they do make an amazing sandwich.

Doesn't beat El Guero Canelo though.

  • This whole fascination with chicken and waffles is kinda dumb.

Have some good waffles with butter and maple syrup or go get some good fried chicken, preferably without skin to avoid too much fat. Or, come over to our house when Mrs BlkMtn makes the most amazing oven fried chicken, no skin, no oil, great seasoning. You'll think you were somewhere in he south. Amazing woman!

Anyway, don't mix the genres of cooking.

We should reject, out of hand, any player who demands a good chicken and waffle place.

  • Folks let me tell you about my biscuits and gravy story...........

I had just moved to Arizona, a NYC kid. I meet this guy who only talks about biscuits and gravy. We are headed to the White Mountains one day and he is talking about stopping in some small mining town, Globe, on the way and getting his favorite dish. I am expecting a wonder something along the line of pancakes, bacon, biscuits, gravy, eggs all combined and one of the greatest things of all time.

We get to the little diner, Just-a cafe, and my friend orders his favorite - biscuits and gravy. Fully in love but never having seen the dish and thinking I am about to get the best breakfast of my life I order the same.

The waitress three minutes later brings out two dishes of biscuits and gravy. I look at my plate and ask "what the hell is this"?

Its biscuits and gravy you dumbass, my friend responded.

Let me just say, I asked for the menu and found some pancakes and reloaded.

Worse damn dish of food I have ever seen. Biscuits and gravy. WTF?

Ahh WATO, the things you are missing in life...

BnG is really dependent upon the quality of the biscuits and the gravy, both have to be good or the dish suffers. However, what defines good but one's own palate? Me? I prefer biscuits and gravy to hummus any day. :>

  • Wato: All you need is lots of pepper and some Tabasco and you're set. It's also good to add bacon and eggs and put the gravy over your country fries or hash browns.

Now that is starting to sound like the delicious Canadian delicacy of poutine.

Thinking about this is making me hungry for some Mexican poutine (aka Nico's or Los Betos Super Fries). :)

    Man I miss Tucson.

  • AZ did land a recruit from PA....perhaps some eatery should offer up scrapple?

    NogalesJerry

  • Having already eaten breakfast this moring - pancakes - you guys have gotten me hungry all over again.

Actually beleive it or not, chili is on the menu today for lunch. Since I am making it I suspect it will be quite good and fire hot.

And btw, Nuke and Ricky, both of you guys are defintiely right. My friend who loved the biscuits and gravy claimed that the dish in Globe was among the world's best.

As for the hummus I know a lot of guys here who love it for breakfast. The fact that I do not seperates me from many of the 'locals'. However, after about eleven in the morning, yeah, I can eat it until it is coming out of my eyeballs.

    Now onto the chili.

    Excellent thread Jerry, excellent.

  • Wato, you would've never made it in the military, especially a war theater where SOS (shit on shingles) is a staple. It's hard to find good biscuits and gravy. coffee

  • There used to be a place here on the east side called Cory's. I thought they had some of the best "biscuits and gravy", their dish had a spicy sausage patty on the biscuit, scrambled eggs on the patty and smothered with gravy. Unfortunately they have closed.

For some reason, most places I have had biscuits and gravy at around the country, aren't very good - either the gravy is poor (e.g. too much flour) or the biscuits are not really biscuits or overcooked. Oh, and if you ask for biscuits and gravy or eggs and bacon in places like Montreal, you get a really strange look...

    nukengr

  • No offense meant Catnaz but I have been known to eat more than a few strange things in rather unusual places and unusual circumstances...........there are comfort foods and there are survival foods. As long as the bugs are brown you can eat them most of the time........ninja

  • Fairly new place, Mays Counter, opened up on Country Club and Speedway for chicken and waffles. They get a lot of traffic. Nice guys fwiw.

Street view and location in attached link

I don't think I can really recommend anything "on campus". There are some of the usual places off-campus with a very short walk. Gentle Bens, Frog & Firken, and Zachary's Pizza.

I have heard that before... and not to totally hijack this thread, but why? I'm not trying to start a war here, I've never actually had BK's dogs.

Since I don't live in Tucson anymore, I only get a real Sonoran dog once in a long while, and if you can sell me on it, I'll hit BK next time instead.

  • Uh, I hate to blow up anyone's image of what today's scholarship athletes eat, but most are on a fairly strict training table recommended diet. Team meals are augmented by diet rules customized for each athlete. Some are designed to control weight, or energy level, or to augment muscle-building.

Yes, they do go to a pizza place or to a waffle house, but not as much as they did in the past. Even snacks are pretty much controlled, and the "players choice" is pretty much once a week or less depending if they are hitting their diet numbers or not.

    Most behave themselves pretty well.

After tracking WATO's posts for a few years and with the knowledge that he lives somewhere in the middle east-ish I think I am now convinced he is some spook of some sort.

  • Tate,
The only thing or persons I am able to 'spook' nowadays is occasionally my wife and daughters when I let out a sudden and very loud Bear Down about 3 or 4 in the dead of night for a unsuspecting household.
