Don't we have a construction engineer on this site?

  • So what is happening now on the NEZ? I see the berm that was built up is gradually being reduced; and I see the bases that are being built up for support structures presumably as columns to contain the end zone stands, but how far are we away from seeing those stands getting poured?

RickyK, they need to finish the pile caps, grade beams and underground work before starting the structure. I could not open the camera today to see the progress or prints. I don't know if the stands are separate from the rest of the structure but would guess that the entire structure will be complete in six months. I assume the stands are concrete but don'know if the building portion is concrete or steel.

  • The project will not be done until Summer of 2013. However the core structure is liikely to be finished this summer.

    Jim,
That would be five months, does that include the building? Also 12 months for the finish work is a long time!

  • WSR posted an article that answers most of these questions a month ago.

Yes, the roughed out concrete enclosure WILL BE COMPLETED before the season begins and everything is on schedule so far. The seating may even be installed, BUT will not be functional for thos season because elevators, and all the finished stuff will not be completed until the Summer of 2013.

There is a construction schedule on the contractors web site that shows completion dates for each phase and they are on target so far.

  • Glad to know they are on schedule, you make schedule in the early civil work but can lose it it during the ME and finish.

  • So do any of our experts want to hazard an estimate as to when they will do the pour for the bleachers/stands?

No, but the day they do, I predict they will start very early in the morning.

    What does the schedule say?

  • I'm sorry, I don't see any schedule. If you know, do you mind saying. If you have access to the schedule would you share it, or are you just being a ----?

RickyK, I am in China and cannot open anything today. I may be an asshole but not this time. I do not know what the schedule says and never saw it before. Might I also add that I thought it was supposed to be done in January or February. What do I know, I just tried to answer your question honestly, last time.

"I see the berm that was built up is gradually being reduced"

The berm you refer to was what soil was excavated and then replaced under the main mat foundation. This is called engineered fill or over excavation. It goes back in in (typically 1' thick) lifts. Density and moisture content are measured to ensure theyre within a certain range of optimum before the backfill continues. Then the foundation(s) is poured and then backfilled around, which is why it took a while for that stock pile to disappear, a lot of handwork involved with backfilling (again in 1' compacted lifts) around a foundation. There will be some overburden (displaced dirt) that will need to be hauled off site. There was also some utility work which created spoil which in such a tight work area was probably hauled to the stockpile until they needed to backfill the utility related excavations.

"I see the bases that are being built up for support structures presumably as columns to contain the end zone stands but how far are we away from seeing those stands getting poured? "

Those structures will support more than just the stands. From the schematic elevation view available on the PDC site you can see that there are 6 column lines. 5 of those appear to be structural and one of those appears to suport just the architectural facade. You will see those concrete columns continue to be formed and poured and stripped and then formed again. At some point you will see some pre-cast grade beams set for the mezzanine level, and second floor and then you will see the pre-cast stadium risers (stands) set in place along with the third floor concourse. According to their schedule this should occur in May of this year.

One interesting note, in case you wanted to know the exact field elevation, it is 2,433.56 feet above sea level.

  • Yes, it was Tate. Thank you, I have a much better understanding. And Peb, my apologies, I never want to get down on a guy who can't open something. It was late and I'm getting to be a crotchety old man. I do apologize.

    Accepted Rickyk.

The concrete structure will be complete at the end of may and the building enclosed by the end of July.

thanks for the schedule and elevations, Tate.

  • For future reference, here is the website I referred to earlier, which has the webcam, schematics, and completion dates for each aspect of the project for the North End Zone.

The final design drawings show that everything around the stadium will be brought into the 21st century in terms of the look and feel, which will include Cherry Avenue.

I think most fans would agree that the upgrade is needed to enhance the fan experience, and if they can renovate the rest of the stadium facilities it will be a very much needed step.
