JoePa is just getting worse and worse!

  • Sounds like what we have been saying is very true. He was the most powerful person at Penn St and maybe the state!

Probe eyes Paterno's preference for handling problems internally - CNN.com

Louis Freeh's investigation at Penn State University appears to be examining Coach Joe Paterno's apparent preference for handling issues internally.

  • Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports.com has a great right up onthe Joe Pa investigation. One thing that will come out not directly related to Jerry Sandusky but definitelyproving major violations under Joe Paterno at Penn State is the Vicky Triponey events between 2003 and 2007 in which she tried as waas her job as VP for disciplinary issues to enforce studnet behavioral standards true of all students on football players and Joe PA insisted on handling it his way and Curley and Spanier caved to Joe on this. This is blatant special benefits for football players and is a clear cut major violation and along with the Sandusky coverup can be used to prove a pattern of institutional lack of control daring back to at least 2011 but I believe when all is done it will be proved back to 1998. Although a death penalty is possible I do not see thtem getting it but their beloved football program is about to be totally emasculated and likely will never recover. The Freeh report should be out within weeks and then all hell breaks loose.

I agree in a way. As almighty as Penn State football has been, it's really only in Pennsylvania, which reminds me a lot of SMU and its own fallout from the death penalty. Any major sanctions on Penn St. will have a very, very dramatic impact on its ability to recover within a decade or two. Conversely, a school like USC, Miami, or Alabama may get hit hard by sanctions, but won't nearly have the devastating effect as we're currently witnessing at USC and previously witnessed at Alabama.

Having spent some time in the area there is something about Pennsylvania's ability to grow football players. These kids are just one generation removed from the days of the steel mills and the coal mines are still in major production. Physical labor has been the way for a long time. This is truly football country and they love Penn State. The strange thing is the record financial giving that is now going on there. There are die hards there and they are shoving. I do think they will have a hard time recruiting out of state. I'm not ready to count them out regardless of what they find on Paterno.

Everyone in Ohio thinks Woody Hayes was one of the all time biggest assholes and they took forever to get rid off him. It didn't slow down the program. I guess what goes on in the Appalachian Mountains stays in the Appalachian Mountains. Winning is everything and the rug can be lifted from time to time as needed.

    rdotrbennett

  • I'm sure you're right, RD, and you addressed the point I was trying to make. The USC's, Miami's and Alabama's recruit nationally, and produce the "show" athletes that go into the NFL (QBs, WRs, CBs and Safeties) that get noticed, bring fame, etc. Penn State produces NFL players, of course, but they're rarely "loud" players that gain huge fandom. Additionally, as you said, Penn State, much like Texas, recruits almost its entire class in market.

For Penn State, the fear I'd be worried about is what if the shame becomes so bad that those Pennsylvania tough HS athletes start looking toward the other Big 10 schools rather than PSU. If that's the case, it could be a death penalty situation even without the death penalty.

  • Rd and Gary... Please know that I am not about to indict either or you... I know that you're both are trying hard to be objective as to PSU recruiting... But any player and/or any parent, whether in state or not, that does not recognize the pure evil that was allowed to perpetuate at PSU under Joe Pa is either intellectually lazy or morally bankrupt.. ...

There is no justification for what went on... None at all... Not only with the abhorrent Sandusky issue, but now it seems that this turn a blind eye attitude was rampant within not only the program, but the so called University of higher education and the State of Pennsylvania government...... a very sorry state of affairs indeed.

People might attempt to down play this all they want, but be sure that there are plenty of us that will not only hold PSU and their fans accountable, but their after the fact enablers to a higher standard...

  • Pin High. I completely agree with you. If this had happened at Arizona we would be replacing everyone down to the janitors.

The rest of the world is completely repulsed. The problem is the inability of the locals who have had such success there to step aside while some one cleans up the mess. Certain locals donating record amounts of money to the university and are hoping the problem will just be forgotten. Like Gary says, the same would be true at Alabama or certain other schools where football is bigger than life.

My opinion is that most Pennsylvanians are just as repulsed as we are. The core problem exits at the university. I also hope the death penalty, in some form, is put in place.

    rdotrbennett

  • RD.. we are in total agreement... I hope the locals and the alums will demand a full house cleaning at PSU or all funds and donations will be cut off... just a 5 year hiatus will send a powerful message...

There for the grace of God go us... I just have to believe in my heart that the UofA would not of turned a blind eye for our version of a Hero (Lute)....

  • And the report has been released. Looks like the Department of Education is even going after them! Love the fact the JoePa's family is still saying that he did what he was suppose to do. His family is in denial! SO sad!!

  • First Joe obviously committed perjury in his grandjury testimony on the 1998 incident and his knowledge of it. Secondly the DOE is involved because this cover up is a clear violation of Federal Educatioon Laws passedin 1990 (Clery Act) and could resujlt in the university losing all federal support and its abiility to provide education to students. You will now see the BOT throw Joe PA, Spanier, Schultz and Curry under the bus to save the school and they will be be cleaaner than anyone else in the nation. Yoou y also see a cut back in the football program by the BOT and likely self sanctions on the football program including likely vacatin all wins since the beginnning of the 1998 season.

As for me I am tired of the holier than thou proclamations of the Paterno family and wish they would just shut up. They have nothing to add to the information on this case and should just take the loss of his beloved image and and go forward accepting his deserved fall from grace.I do not doubt he did a lot of good but the bad is much worse than the good he did.

Jim Gary the Penn State site hides behind the VIP thing to stop outside opinions on their mess which is disingenous obviously they are blinded by their fandom and of course we know fanis short fanatic. Like all schools they have some blind fools as fans

  • I do not want to stand on soap box but simply put if the NCAA does not give Penn State the Death Sentence it will expose the NCAA as a pure money grubbing garbage machine to its core.

Penn State as an institution needs to be punished from head to toe and its Alumni should be the ones making sure it happens.

I know all about glass houses and not throwing stones, but this is nothing short of sick.

The lives of many families have been destroyed and Penn State University is to blame for that and its football team was the epicenter.

    wato

  • A pathetic aspect of this is watching Jay Paterno right now on CFB-Live on espnu trying to blindly protect his dad's legacy. I would just shut up were I him.

Wato, you and others posting here are 100% correct... the NCAA needs to deliver PSU a severe slapping.

More importantly, PSU alums and the people of the Pennsylvania need to demand justice....

RickyK please go and stuff a sock in little Paternos mouth for us.... He not only needs to quit covering for the enabler JoePA, but he should finally issue an apology and deep regret for all the suffering heaped upon the innocent victims by joepa's turning a blind eye for the sake of the FB Program....

I don't know what is more disgusting, joepa's complete disregard for the kids and failure to be a true leader or his family's continuing effort to shift any blame or responsibility anywhere but where it truly lays... Sandusky was not hired by or working for the PSU Pres, VP or AD... he was hired by joepa and when the Pres,VP and AD found out they were ready to report it all but joepa suggested that they deal with it in quiet less intrusive manner.... Sandisky was allowed to remain there for an additional FOURTEEN years, at joepa's pleasure to protect the FB program and coach's reputations... both of which have been irreparably damaged forever...

  • Well I managed to get blacklisted bytr the PENN STATE idiots on there site so I posted ontheBlue Board and so far have gotten 2 up votes form national posrers. PENN State is in denial. I plan to contact Greg Byrne ask that Arizona refuse to schedule with Penn State until they clean up their mess.

    Jim

    jjones163

  • So let me get this straight, the kids, who had nothing what so ever to do with it, should be the ones to suffer. The Fans who had nothing to do with it should be the ones to suffer. Rubbish, everyone involved has been fired. The NCAA which stands for Nobody Cares About Athletes, just loves to act tough and on the ball for a PR agenda. This is a crime not a recruiting violation, it should be handled by the legal system. Everyone involved should go to Jail, including the Janitors that didn't report it and all the higher-ups that tried to cover it up. Anyone who covers up for pedophiles should go to jail. It doesn't matter if they ware a Penn State polo or a mitre to work. Oh, but no, the NCAA should come down hard on the kids, and Fans. If you want to make sure every athletic department plays by the rules, don't punish the kids unless they are the ones involved, but start taking a percentage of the athletics departments revenue. If the NCAA started confiscating revenue from the TV, Tickets and Merchandise, you would see college football clean up in the hell of hurry.

A Rose Bowl before I die Please!!!!

  • King I agree withpartof your post concerning the innocent players who should be able to go elsewhere.
As to the fans they are the oones who help create an atmosphere where Joe PA waas more powerful than the University President and no person could take him on. I understand the poor janitors fearing for their jobs if they went public they owuld have been fired. Look at what happened toTehVP Vicky Triponey who took on GOD (JOe Paterno) on behavioral issues and was forced out. The truth is since about 1995 Joe was an onery old fool who wanted to protect his football program at any cost and owuld destroy anyone who got in his way. The only person more responsible for this mess other than Sandusky who is totally evil is Joe Paterno who did not carre about victims or anyone else except his fiefdom. I agre with punishing the school by takijng waway millions of dollars of revenues and would like to see them barred from future Rsoe Bowl appearances for at least 10 years.

  • This has just exploded into a worse mess than the unbelievable mess that it already was.

I'd like to say the death penalty would suffice in terms of punishment but it won't.

It's almost as if no penalty is enough for the heinous crimes of Sandusky, and the coverup by top officials. There is no shame for Paterno now, but his family will be ostracized forever. If your name is Paterno, you'll want to change it. The others involved in the coverup will face trial in the civil arena.

There will be shame aplenty for anything associated with PSU football, but I'm not sure what you do to bring justice outside of that, and letting he courts are care of everything else. When the NCAA plays law enforcement, it punishes the innocent, not the guilty.

  • Look at it this way, if there is nobody left at Penn State who was involved, why is there shame and disrepute on the institution. Is anybody willing to blame Angela Merkel for WWII. Justice can only be served in this case by putting conspirators to the cover up in Jail. The NCAA should have no role here.

    King of Daleks

  • BlkMtn, King, PinHigh, jj, and everyone else in here are right. I can't remember a sadder sports-related story than this.
Lives of kids- wrecked, and no way to compensate them.
    Careers- ended, tarnished, or shelved
Images- of the institution, of education, of a formerly great coach, football, of oh so much, turned to horrible images in the mind.
A formerly (supposed) great university completely run aground.

Paterno was a religious man, yet he sold out even that deep sense of right and wrong to cover for a monster.

Words do not suffice in trying to come to terms. It's a lot like looking at the portrait of Dorian Gray. Pity and contempt.

    King,

Some of the BOT at Penn State is still actively involved..........and on top of that the institution as a whole essentially was covering up information for almost 15 years.

In essense the institution was more concerned with keeping their cash cow on its feet then do something with honor.

    15 years. 15 years. 15 years.

They allowed lives to be destroyed for this lenght of time.

IMO, they should now be punished for this.

  • It sounds like indictments will soon follow for people as high up as the then-president of the University. Like others, I agree that this entire thing is abhorrent, but it does look like justice will be hard on those involved.

I read the other day that donations to Penn State are at an all time high, which is both interesting and disturbing. I still point back to the taxpayer as one of the innocent that's going to get screwed. Here the University is pulling in massive donations, yet it'll be the state of Pennsylvania getting sued civilly and having to pony up the lawsuit settlements.

Like others, I agree that PSU and its continued excuses are shameful.

  • This postlikely will not be popular. As indicated I am blacklisted at the Pennn State site for 247 ( damn vbunch of nazi's), but what theheckif at my age I cannot be toltally blunt and honest I guess I never will. Things I observed iis firwst I feel for the good fans and players at Penn State who will suffer in this, but I have no symphathy for the Paterno family as Joe was the second most culpable person (along with Mrs Sandusky ) in this story.

    My views on going forward:
1, Joes pension should be put in trust for the victims as compensation for his part in this aided and abbetted by his family. I am sick of hearing Jay Paterno and his lame rants.

    2. Anyone who believes Jerry Sandusky first start as a pedophile in 1998 knloows nothing about pedophiles as they do not start the pattern in their mid to late 50's but much younger. I assure yhou there are hundreds if not thousands of other victims out there who have been too ashamed to come forward. Pedophiles profile their victims to pick those witoout fathers and hide behind institutions like the Catholic Church, Scouts or the Y among others where they gain the trust of parents and the community to find their prey. My first exposure to this was in 1956 when a fifth grade teacher at my school and assistant scout master abused 3 boys in our troop at Peter Howell school inTucson. He was also an elder at our church and went to prison.Treatment of pedophiles almost never works.

    3. There is no way that he could have continued doing this without the help of these four powerful men who iwllfully broke the law to protect the university and it King football.

    4. Some blame the janitors but if they would have come forward they would have been fired and not believed. Just as the mother of the victim was not believed in 1998 and just as Bishop Green of Tucson did not believe victims in Tucson who acused Monsignor Robert Troupia of yuma and then Tucson of 20 counts of sexual molestation staarting in the the 1970's . The good Monsignor was known by Yumma police as the chicken hawk. In 1991 Bishop Moreno removed him from ministry and sent hi,m tpo Maryland but the church and Cardinal Ratzingeer who is now Pope did not defrock him until 2005 and he never went to prison because of statute of limitations. Still today a Cardinal in Philadelhia who died in January 2012 waas covering up these crimes and Mmonsignor who helped cover it up is going to prison for 14 years. Cover up in high places still goes on but God will p;punish Bishops and Cardinals and Popes as well as others.

    5. NO punisshment by the NCAA nwill be adequate for this but maybe the DOE can ste[p in and punish the University so sseverely it will never happen again at Penn State. Closing the university for a few years and then reopening with no AD would be a powerful message.

Unfortuately we cannot stop all of this nonsense but maybe we can stomp on those who abuse and those who protect them so hard thaat we can reduce this kind of crap

Thanks for listening. As you can see I am passionate on this issue and issues concerning the poor, sick, homeless etc andis why I take communion to the hospital and hospice several days a week.

    Have a Blessed Night

I think penny st is going to be hammered on all sides. Civilly they are going to pay hundreds of millions, there is the chance of the board shutting of federal funding and they could lose the big money maker football. Losing money on two sides and losing an income source could cripple not just thefootball program but might harm the school for years or decades to come. Realistically I think they will be hammered in civilly but don't know what the education board will do but I don't think the ncaa will do anything because it is a big ten school which means they will not get punished if it was usc they would kill the program but penny st they will say this is not our businesssl

    darkhand44

  • From the strictly interpreted jurisdictional limits of NCAA cognizance, this will be viewed as "lack of institutional control", so don't look for too much in the way of NCAA punishment for the program itself. This doesn't involve recruits, the former HC is dead, the staff has changed over, and the main animal is in prison. I seriously doubt the NCAA could or would mete out the death penalty or suspend football at PSU under these conditions. I don't even think the NCAA has rules or jurisdiction specific to this mess.

The main thrust of punishment for PSU will come from criminal indictments and punishments, then the civil suits and cash awards. These punishments will be the far more severe, and justifiably so.
