Mike Stoops' Coaching Possibilities Are Evaporating Very Rapidly

  • "Rather than hiring a big-name former head coach like Randy Shannon or Mike Stoops to coach his defense, University of South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier decided to promote from within."

"Spurrier named third-year cornerbacks coach Lorenzo Ward as his new defensive coordinator this week, replacing Ellis Johnson – who accepted an offer to become the head coach at Southern Mississippi last week."

"Former Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops is still on the hunt for a job and the field is narrowing. One of the rumored places to land Stoops was Nebraska where Bo Pelini promoted John Papuchis from defensive line coach to defensive coordinator. Yep, you can scratch that one off the list right along with Ohio State and Arkansas. So where does that leave Mike Stoops in terms of returning to Oklahoma?"

"Of course, there's an additional level to all this, in the form of Mike Stoops. The former co-coordinator with Venables, fired this fall from Arizona, is on the market. His brother, Bob, was asked even Monday if Mike would again be joining the staff."

“I don't have any room,” Bob Stoops said."

"Former Hawkeye Sean Considine visited Hawkeye practice yesterday and told media members he'd fully support Phil Parker for Iowa's next defensive coordinator. Considine credits Parker's teaching as the reason he played seven years in the NFL."

  • You know if you get fired from a non-BCS school, you'd pretty much have to take a job at a smaller school or lower division.

But if you get fired from a BCS school, you are too accomplished to not be threat to all but the most elite coaches - so you options are almost more limited.

  • Wineknow, what's unusual about this Mike Stoops situation is that the above noted programs that were perhaps possibilities all had ties to the Stoops brothers.

It seems that Mike is incapable of straying away from the Stoops connected universe.

One job that may open up, that is somewhat of a solid BCS job, is the DC at Maryland. I, however, cannot imagine Mike working outside of his cocoon in the Atlantic coast very easily.

  • Don't be shocked if Mike does not wind up in Oklahoma when it is all said and done.

  • If Stoops were smart he would not be looking for a coordinator position anywhere, but a HC job at a Division 2 school.
He needs to become a better Head Coach and being a coordinator will not help him improve as a HC.

He may have to keep quiet till after bowl games are over. Then again he can afford to sit out a season with his severance.

  • OU with Bob...Martinez may be gone soon.

    pantheraonca

  • I think everybody thought Martinez was going to SC but Spurrier promoted his DB coach instead.

  • The AG chimes in this morning regarding the Mike Stoops to OK momentum:

Personally, I don't believe this is a good career move but, a man's gotta make a buck, right?

    NogalesJerry

  • Bad career move, unless Bob leaves in 2 or 3 years and Mike assumes the helm. But being DC will not improve his HC ability.

The Mark of a great leader is that he mentors and trains his subordinates to assume the helm when he is gone!

    AZWILDCATS

  • As long as David Boren is President of OU Mike will not ever be HC there.
