For me yesterday. Was talking to Mr. Hall briefly who was at the U when I was going to school and he mentioned some of my old friends that I was in class with. Guess I just missed Willie Hamilton who was a good friend, but did get to see one of my best friends from that era in Wally Brumfield. Was talking to Vince Phason who was a little later and looked up and said, "Waldo!" We hugged. Man it's been a long time. Also Charley McKee who is now known as Jabari was there. Charley will always be famous for seeing the record longest TD pass in UA history, 92 yards against Oregon St. We were down 22-7 in the 4th Quarter with about 6 or 7 minutes remaining and they were inside our 10 YL, when Jim Ventriglia had the good sense to simulate an OSU QB snap call and they fumbled. Charley gathered in a pass from Bill Demory and it was on. From 22-7 to 34-22 and the Beavs, who were pretty good there under the Giant Pumpkin Dee Andros were pissed. One of my best friends, Merle Gathers, got into the game at RB and told me later he wanted no part of that. He said when you turn that kind of game around against a heavily favored opponent someone is going to get hurt, most likely the ball carrier.
Anyway, a final aside, I found Vince Phason, one of the best DBs we ever turned out, was also there and has been stricken with some kind of debilitating muscle disease. Was told that Mike Stoops' secretary worked extremely hard to get him a disability so that says a lot to me. Stoops helping a Wildcat from the 70s that had no ties to him. Best thing I've heard about him lately.
