PAC 12 Network Update 6/10/2012

  • clapclapThe PAC 12 is expected to announce theTVnetworks and game dates and times with next several days(upto 10 days). The first week or two some games will switch to a Friday or Sunday because of the large no of OOC games (12 the first week).

The PAC 12 network is still, negotiating with Dish, Direct, Verizon, ATT and Charter among others. Direct has been quoted as not being willing ot add 7 channels so a compromise may be needed. Expect this to go down to the wire (late August) before resolution. My best guess is direct comes on for the PAC 12 National and one Regional only and not all seven with regional being offered depending on the market you live in ( LA will bett the LA schools and Phoenix and Tucson will get the Arizona regional) I do not expect Dish to sign but am hopeful on Verizon, ATT and Charter, but allwill likely go down to the wire.

PAC 12 Enterprises has signed a deal with Ooyala for digital programing for net and smart phone apps which will initially be available for all who have the four partners to carry 24/7 PAC 12 events, coaches show, press conferences to their computers or other devices digitally. They will also workto eventually make this available to those who do not have access to the four cable companies. I do know that all subscribers to Cox, Comcast TW or Brighthouse will have this available with verification of subscription. I do not know what the additional cost if any will be.

I do know that many fans have been bugging the Satelite companies to add the PAC 12 as well as Verizon and ATT. So I believe they are feeling the pressure. The pac12.org site to contact your source to add it and where you can verify if you have it available.

Right now the profit from the Networks should be worth five to ten million per school but if direct and the others come on it will go up a great deal. I can seethe Networks being worth 15 to 20 million per school in about five years.

  • Thanks for the report, Jim. Great stuff. In reference to the phone and mobile apps and computer access with the cable companies, it's my understanding from a few in the know that this will work a lot like HBO Go in that if you subscribe via cable you'll get all the mobile connectivity at no additional charge. I'm sure everyone hopes this to be the case.

  • Gary what you say about no addditional cost is also what I understand, but I have not verified that from a reliable source.

As you all know I live in Glendale and have Cox which will have the PAC 12 network here in Arizona and throughout the nation. I believe Cox in Arizona must have the PAC 12 National and PAC 12 Arizona regional on either basic or expanded basic, but I am not sure iff the other five regionals would be offered or if they are if they will be on the sports tier. However with connectivity and the sports tier I should be able get any of it I want. Of course you in California would need to be with Cox, TW or Comcast (brighthouse) and they would likely have the SC and UCLA regional so connectivity would be needed for some Arizona events.

I understand the PaC 12 will charge carriers between .90 cents and 1.00 per subscriber inside the PAC footprint which includes the six PAC 12 statres and Nevada and .50 per subscribeer outside the footprint. However outside all seven networks will be offered in sports tiers where not all purchase and so not all of he 33 million homes outside the footprint who are cable subscribers for the four cable companies will subsribe.

  • Jon Wilner of the The San Jose Mercury Sun updated the datra today. Direct TV will not be adding all seven of the networks but there will be very serioous negotiations about them picking up the PAC 12 National Network at the very least. However, the negotiations will not get really serous until August and resolution if any may not occur until late August in the week before the first games. Not mentioned in the article is that negotiations are ongoing with Dish, Verizon, ATT, Charter and Century Liink which is big in the Arizona market.

The PAC 12 has not announced the TV schedule for this season yet. Expected later this week likely Friday. The games between WSU at BYU will be on ESPN and the game for UCLA VS Rice has been announced also as the PaC has no control on these games. The UCLA Rice game will be with the CUSA carrier. ESPN and Fox under their 3 billion dollar contract have been given first choice on four games to be selected by them prior to the season. I believe ESPN took the Notre Dame-USC game with the first pick although that has not been announcecd. Fox will have the second and third picks and then ESPN the last but those picks while they have been made have not been announced, but expect USC to be in at least 3 of the 4 picks likely USC-Oregon and USC against Washington.

  • Jim,

So being up here in Colorado if i have Direct TV I will not be able to get the Arizona part of the network? Will this mean just wit hthe olympic sports or will alot of our basketball and some of our football games not be available to those with direct TV outside of Arizona? IE game watch bars for the Alumni.

  • Right now Direct has not signed with the PAC 12 network but are talking to them. The negotiations are not expected to get hot until August and any agreement will likely just before the first games starting 8/29. Direct has openly said they will not carry all seven networks period. They are trying to negotiate for the PAC 12 National and may also provide the local PAC 12 regional within its region. So in colorado that owuld be theUtah/Colorado network. This would mean you would only access Arizona events aired on the pac12 national. Now all football games will be on either Fox, ESPN or the pac naitonal so if you have all of these you will get them assumed Direct makes a deal. Many basketball games (but not all) will be available through these same three. some Arizona basketball games and virtually all Olympic Sports will only be on the Arizona Regional network. Since most sports bars use DirectTV access thereis contingenton a deal being made.

My peersonal belief is a deal with Direct TF for at least the PAC 12 national by the end of September 2012. Remember that the PAC 12 will have first choice of games in the third, sixth and ninth weeks of the season so really good games will be aired there.

I believe Direct will only act quickly if they risk losing significant business if they do not act.

  • Jim, Thank you! That is what i was thinking just wanted to make sure was I was thinking along the same lines. I know the money will be good for Arizona but what a pain in the BUTT!!!

  • When in doubt, come to chat. The Link Master (aka Ashton) almost always has a solution.

Yes, Ashton is the king when it comes to accessing games online, but seriously, we're the Conference of Champions!! Are we to be relegated to obscure online feeds for major football and basketball games. With all due respect to Ashton's mastery of the Internet, let's hope not.

Thanks for the updates, Jim. Honestly, the DirecTV "sports bar" thing is what I find most interesting. Not so much for basketball, but most Alumni Groups gather at sports bars out of market on Saturday's to watch the football games, and it'd be a bummer if seeing some of these games isn't even an option.

  • To clarifythere will be no online feed to the PAC 12 networks unless you have a subscrition through a PAC 12 Carrier. Right now that is Cox Comcast, TW or Brighthouse
