RichRod using a variety of tactics

Rodriguez uses a variety of tactics to try to change the culture of the football program.

  • The last paragraph says it all.

While the former coach grumbles that he took the program as far as it could have gone, RR is not satisfied.

Previous attempts to be positive failed in an absence of a PMO.

  • I support his long term approach 100% but in your opinion Brad, has he written off the coming season? It seems our recruiting was soft and he's not utilizing every minute possible on the field - like you say changing the culture first and then getting all the other stuff done seems to be what I am reading between the lines here. thoughts?

  • I don't think he has written off the season at all, but I do not think he is obsessed with it. I think he believes a culture change now will make things smoother in the fall and moving forward. I also think he is willing to risk a game or two this season, for the betterment of the program as a whole (much like what Miller did the first year). Stoops most of his energy into immediate success, and that is why his team was instantly more competitive than the prior Mackovic teams. I think Stoops reinvented from year to year, while Rodriguez has a master plan that began the moment he took the job.

  • Brad, I'm actually infatuated by an earlier report from you, about Rodriguez's "tactic" regarding the use of the word "turds".

  • so who's the former starter that might be quitting?

  • That is what a few of the incoming freshmen told us, that Rodriguez was going to use part of spring to make sure only the best, most committed guys were on the team.

  • Actually, in an interview I saw, Rich will be using every minute on the field allowable as he can bring them back on the Monday following the spring game. That was all part of the calculation in canceling practice. I admit that I don't get some of those looking to criticize RR. If he was writing off the season, I doubt he will have a sense of urgency (and seek to instill one as well) right now.

Let me be clear that I was not, in any way, criticizing.

  • Let me also be clear you are not the one I was targeting for a disapproving nod. I was disapproving the gentleman on here in another thread who suggested some horrible scandal in the fact that Cortez Johnson was transferring. Especially if that sense of urgency results in transfers/attrition. I just don't understand it. You know I would never suggest you were being err, unreasonable?

You know I was frustrated by Stoops and losing but he's gone now and unlike Mackovic he was actually trying... I just don't think he needs to be criticized after the fact. Same for Tomey or Smith.

Likewise, we have a brand new staff, we'll know soon enough if they are doing the right things or not....criticism at this stage is ignorance - no way to know all the details yet. Obviously, the spin has been pretty positive, but some of the accusations thrown around have been so patently ridiculous that most thinking persons can see through them.

  • Actually, I'm not sure just how much Stoops was really trying over the last year. I know that he felt when he was 7-1, that he had his ticket out of here, which is what he wanted and when that fell apart I believe his personal issues became more than a distraction; particularly when it came to recruiting. If anybody ever wrote a John U. Bacon book and get in to every aspect of Stoops it would not be pretty. I'm just going to say it because I'm still pissed about that second run he took at us from the comfort of Brother Bob's bosom.
