Speed, speed and more speed

One thing Coach Rodriguez wanted out of this recruiting class was help in improving overall team speed. He accomplished that today.

  • This is very encouraging especially the potential on the defensive side of the ball.

I may be wrong, but it seemed to me that the one game that could have propelled AZ under Stoops was he double OT game her against Oregon.

Again, someone correct me if my recollection is incorrect, but it seemed that our collective LBs slow afoot and slow to react, and we just couldn't stop their last two drives.

  • It's hard to sit and watch all these 2 Star guys that chose us over Colorado State and Air Force and get excited about this class. After this year, the cupboard will be pretty empty. I hope we are combing the JC's for 2013.

  • Gary,
Well done. Great piece. Bring em in fast and athletic, let Chris Allen get em faster, never huddle, and play as fast as possible. Amazing how many guys coming in that we are not sure where they will play.. Bring in the blazing athletes, and sort it out later.

"Why not Arizona? Why not us? Why can't we win it all?''

That's been the knock on recent Arizona linebackers. Solid defenders moving forward, but not the best in coverage or when the play is coming from the inside in like on a WR slant.

I agree. And while admittedly, I don't know too much about football recruiting, it sure does seem difficult to become a huge fan of this recruiting class when its ranked 11th out of the twelve classes in our conference. Honestly... we only signed 1 (one) 4-star recruit while teams like USC, Stanford, Oregon, and UCLA all have 7 or more 4-star guys. Heck even Utah and the scum-devils were able to sign 5 four-star recruits. This class, on paper, seems terrible. With the coaching blunder that happened at ASU and with UCLA losing their coach, I'd think that we'd at least have a better class than they do... yet here we are. Second to last. Seems really odd. Kinda sad too.

  • FWIW, Conwell and Kelley are listed as 4 star recruits on other sites. Also, we got a few players that didnt blossom until their senior year which is why they arent rated very high.......allen, cozens, Griffey, Georges to name a few. I think this class is better than it looks and will ultimately pay off on the field. If Harper and Neal sign it will boost our ranking up quite a bit. Rodriguez recruited for need and for the future, the school up north recruited the best players they could find even if they werent necessarily at a position of need and they also recruited a bunch of JC players, that will pay off as immediate fixes but wont bode well for the future. Probably because Graham is already planning his exit strategy.

I feel like every fan at every school accross the country could say the same thing in defense of their school's latest recruiting class. The fact that independent analysts have been able to spend years reviewing players and gauging talent and have decided to put our class in 11th place out of 12 schools is the real issue. Fans will always get excited and fans will always find ways to defend their program... but damn. when the independet analysts are ranking you 11th out of 12... you're bad. you're really, really bad. 11th place sucks. no other way to say it. and by the way... 10th place sucks too.

  • Also, Boise State, who has become a national power is never ranked in the top 50 in recruiting. So all these supposed experts seem to be overlooking some pretty good players out there. ive said it before and i'll say it again, i dont go by the star rating, i go by evaluating the film i can find on the player and by how many and what schools offer them scholarships. Take a look at their commits.......I would say ours looks better than theirs on paper, but they are a much better team than we are, how could that be? The "experts" said our class is better, oh my!

  • No question usc, cal, stanford, ucla, washington, and oregon leading. I don.t see much separation between the bottom six. Until UA starts winning under RR we won.t be able to match the star quality of the top six. That doesn't mean his teams won't measure up on the field though. If rich pulls off 7 or 8 wins next year you will likely see UA break in the "experts" top 6.

  • I just saw ESPN had us ranked #12 in the pac. But again you never knwo with the star system. I played golf with Spencer Larsen this past summer and his comment about it was "I was a 1 star and now i am in the NFL" And like the comment above, Boise St gets the RIGHT players and they win. I would rather have the RIGHT players and win the worry about were we rank with the star system. GO CATS!!!!

I guess that statement is kinda true...

According to 247 sports, the top 6 recruiting classes in the Pac-12 are separated by 37.06 points. The bottom six are separated by 27.5 points. While yes, the there is a larger distance between 1 and 6 than there is between 7 and 12... being 27.5 points out of 7th place tells me that we're really no where near 7th place! Especially when 7th place (the pathetic scum-devils) have been able to sign 5 4-star recruits and the same recruiting service says we're only able to sign 1! I want to win the f*cking Rose Bowl. We really need to start recruiting some frckin' talent! Pisses me off.

  • That same ASU team that has "out recruited" us the last 4 years has gone 1-3 against us, and should be 0-4 if it werent for a missed extra point!

Yeah, I guess I just dismissed it b/c as a fan, there's really no way to know who the "right" players are. I'm sure with hind-sight you can look back and say "yeah, that guy was the right guy" but other than that... how in the world do you know if he's the right guy? Obviously a drop-back pro-style QB isn't an ideal fit for a read-option spread offense... but other than with a few exceptions, fans have to rely on the experts to really judge the talent and see how their class stacks up against what other schools are bringing in. And in that regard... we failed miserably. We came in well behind the scummies. That equals failure in my book.

Once again, did you not see my post about the sun devils and their 1-3 record against us the last 4 years? The "experts" rated their recruiting classes higher than ours in each of those 4 years, that really paid off for them huh? These so called "experts" have just as much knowledge about football as you and I. I think of them as being like meteorologists, they get paid to be right 50% of the time.

Fail? We actually beat them 31-27 and all that matters in sports is what happens on the field, not what a recruiting "expert" has to say!

  • dude. stop with the win/loss stuff already. I was ignoring that because I was hoping you were going to get back on track.

I'm talking about our recruiting class being disappointing. Not that fact that we were able to beat them the last few years. I'm talking strictly about this year's recruiting class being such an epic disappointment. If we want to get to the Rose Bowl, we need to start doing things like the programs that get to the rose bowl (USC, Oregon, Stanford). Those programs recruit a significantly higher level of talent than we recruit. We need to start doing that.

11th place, 10th place, 12th place... wherever we end up being ranked, this class is terrible. Its a total step in the wrong direction. You can't win the Pac-12 by finishg dead last (or close to it) in recruting.

If that were the case why would you compare our recruiting class to ASU? I agree it would be nice to recruit with the likes of Oregon and USC, but that is not a realistic goal in my opinion. We need to recruit like Boise State and Oregon State does and find diamonds in the rough and develop our players better than USC and Oregon. Stop with the Wins/loss stuff?"Dude", thats all that matters at the end of the day. Not where we are ranked in recruiting. I feel like I just had this same conversation with an ASU fan.

    Beermancats

  • Um, asu consistently has had better classes. Recruiting is an inexact science, and asu might be losing their OL coach tomorrow.

on National signing day... I think its okay to talk about recruiting classes.

Any other time of the year, sure. I agree. Win/Loss is more important to the fans than recruiting. But on national signing day... I'm talking recruiting. And in that regard, we just got our asses handed to us by just about every school in the conference.

Also, I disagree that we should take the same approach that Boise State and OSU take. We are currently upgrading our facilities, we are pouring all this money into the program... we are trying to recruit on a higher level. In order to win the Pac-12 we need to recruit on the same level as the big dogs. This class simply doesn't get us there. In fact, it takes us further way than we were a year ago. 11th place is terrible.
