Student attendance

  • It's been pathetic to start the season. I was sitting next to someone during the Northern Colorado game who was a student. He was saying that in order to get a ticket to a game in the student section that you would have had to purchase a Zona Zoo pass that included basketball, which cost quite a bit more than the one that just includes football and all other sports. He then went on to mention that since a lot of the students didn't have that pass, they couldn't just walk up and get a ticket to the game. It was like the students needed to decide at the start of the school year whether or not they wanted to pay the extra money for hoops, and if not they were not going to get into games.

I was wondering if the staff, or anyone on the board, knew if that was true? It seems insane that students would have to make that decision on attending games back in Aug - Sept when they buy a Zona Zoo pass. Now our team is showing success and yet students would now have to buy a ticket at regular price to get in. What's the story on this and is Greg Byrne looking into ways to get the students more involved? He's so involved in football I would think he would get involved in this as well. And if not the students, sell the tickets at a discount to the general public to generate more revenue. It just seems to me attendance should be a lot better than it is, regardless of opponent.

I remember back in my day when we had to put our names in for a lottery and show up at McKale to see if our names were on the list for half season tickets. They wouldn't even give our full seasons so that more students could get tickets. Now the student section is awful. It needs fixing now!

  • In my day all students had activity cards goo for all sports events which cost $25 a semester and it was first come first served for basketball at Bear Down. I usually showed up before the Freshman game and got front row west balcony center court for all the games. Bear dwown was a louder place than McKale and great home court advantage for Arizona although some times the teams were not very good.

Greg Byrne is a football first aD but I doubt he made the decision this policy. Quite frankly the less studnent at the games the more than can sell to the fat cats with money and have them sit on their hands and bore us all to death. Somehow we need to find a way to get the studnents there making noise.

  • I loved the lottery system. My question to students is why would you not pay the extra up front. It's not like Arizona isn't a basketball school or anything. The more I learn about our students of today the more I dislike. They're borderline bandwagoners that bail when games go south and now this.

  • Wow, Gary, if that is your opinion of students, then you haven't been to a game recently and seen girls wearing nothing but an Arizona T Shirt cut in an imaginative way.

For me, I think the students of today are Brilliant!

  • My point exactly. It sounds more like a popularity contest to me.

  • I know there are different passes, but I also thought you could upgrade later on. One thing I know, for the past 5-7 years there has been all kinds of confusion regarding student tickets.

  • As of 3 years ago, the Zona Zoo pass got you a ticket to the student section for football and free admission to the other sports (excluding basketball). For basketball you had to register online and they effectively did a lottery to determine who got to buy those tickets, and I think they were half-season tickets still.

Did some quick research, here's what I found.

Students can purchase a "Blue" membership for $95 or a "Red" membership for $135. The only difference is that a "Red" membership allows you admission to Men's basketball. Students can upgrade to "Red" at any time.

However, in order to actually get into the Men's basketball games, you have to reserve your admission online prior to the game, and admission for most games opens up at 10am the Sunday prior to the game.

Only 2290 student seats are available for each basketball game, and online admission reservation is done on a first-come, first serve basis.

There is a penalty system in place where if a student reserves admission but does not attend, they are issued a strike against their account:
    1st strike - email notification
2nd strike - email notification, student is blocked from attending next game
3rd strike - email notification, student is blocked from attending remainder of season

This system also allows for the University to sell unreserved student seats to the general public.

This seems like a much better system than what was in place when I was there.
