  • With all due respect Brad, this article was stating the obvious, even though I disagree with some of your points. Kyryl's transfer was decided long ago when we signed three big men last year. When Kyryl could not crack the line up on a team desperate for big men last year, meant that there is no way in hell that he was going to get any minutes this coming year. Korcheck's commitment had no bearing on his decision whatsoever. Practicing against a player with almost no experience in Kyryl who is so bad at his position who could not crack the rotation last year means nothing to the incoming big men. They could perhaps gain more experience playing against a football dummy than they would against Kyryl. Who are we really kidding here?

As for Mayes, it is not a given that he will stay yet and frankly it does not matter. Mayes was almost as ineffective at his position as Kyryl was at his. He plays very poor defense and in a Sean Miller system which requires ball-pressure from the point guard for the pack-line defense to work, he would be a very ineffective point guard. Except his parents who think he is "start-worthy", I highly doubt that anyone else on the staff thinks that way.

  • David, it sounds to me like you agree with Brad.

  • There is no question Arizona is better off without Turner.

At least the Turner that was here last year. Although it may seem desperate without a true PG, it no more desperate than being held hostage by the whimsical fancies and temperaments of an out of touch with reality 19 year old.

I'll get the decision for him to transfer was Millers and his alone. Arizona had a lot of drama last year and a coach just can't put up with that.

  • First as I indicated earlier JT leaving is addiiton by subtraction in that he was not meeting his obligations in two major areas behavioral (substance issues) and academics (missed classes etc.). In addition even though he had athletic ability his shot was weak and his overall game was weak for a four star much less a so called five star player. KNAT contributed in the classroom but his game is not suited to the US game and he will do better in Europe. Going forward we need patience because our four newcomers may struggle some as freshmen and then again they may shine right away. Expect some of both. Finding a PG for 2012 at this late date may not happen. Jacob Hazzard (grandson) of Walt has been asked to come as a preferred walk on but it may or may not happen. He is a good scoring PG but still as a walkon do not expect more than can be reasonably expected. Mayes can play PG and based on his freshmen year should contribute. Basically we should ignore his sophomore year as he was injured the whole year which affected his effectiveness when he did play. When healthy he can play and shoot. NIck will be fine at either guard and we should see his shooting and game in general take off.

Again as I indicated during chat at the end of the season we need to be patient this year as we may struggle even mmore than this past year or maybe we will hit the jackpot with our new players, but we as fans must be patient and not have too high of expectations, As a fan of ARizona since 1951 I have seen 4 win seasons (twice) and 30+ win season several times and many seasons around 50% so I have learned to be patient and know that betrter thimgs are coming possibly by 2013-2014,

    Go Cats. Bear Down.

  • David, I never said Korcheck's commitment led to Kyryl's departure. I said it eliminated any need for Kyryl as a scout team player. Kyryl's fate was sealed around New Years when Miller pulled him from the rotation. From my understanding at that time the staff actually helped him with skills he will need to be effective in Europe.

As for Mayes, you are right, it is not a given he will stay, but it is more likely that he will and he will have a good opportunity to play extensive minutes at PG. He could easily lose minutes to Johnson and York, but as of now he would likely be the starter.

  • I am not sure why everyone thinks that JT was any good?! I only remember 1 game where I thought he acted like a point guard. I am glad he is gone. Watch that door behind you kid. And get off the weed.

Because he IS good and will only get better. Some just fail to see it. However, he did this to himself so as much as I would have preferred he stay at AZ, he should have learned from the mistake the first time around.

  • Least we forget. JT has had nothing but trouble since high school.

Terry was good, Studdy wasngood, Reeves was good, Kerr was good. Sorry...he is not good from what we have seen of him. What did allmthe other players have? Consistency and class.

  • There is a difference between talent and production. Kerr had less talent than most, but maximized production. JT has talent, but little production. His frosh stats are actually comparible to some of the great guards in UA history, but was also given starter minutes that guys like JT, Terry, Kerr and Reeves didn't have in year one.

  • ZIP,

April 11 kicked off the current signing period which goes through May. Once this signing period ends, players committing to schools in the summer for this upcoming season (like Kyle Fogg did way back when) don't actually sign Letter's of Intent anymore.

  • First, I love the fact we're talking so much hoops the past few days. I'm indifferent about all the player turnover, but am leaning more toward the side of the current changes have been more positive then negative, resulting in a net gain in terms of a roster with a higher talent ceiling, better depth and much better attitudes.

As for Turner, he does have a ton of talent but was his own worst enemy. Classic case of too many outside forces in his ear, and way too much coddling from friends, family and basketball types training his mind to focus on the future and not the NOW.

Turner came to Arizona late and unprepared, got the starting position handed to him when Mayes got injured and that had enough off the court issues to not only become a distraction but a detriment to the team (suspended for Arizona's biggest games @ Florida, Pac-12 Tournament when the season was on the line).

Wherever he goes, I hope he first shuts off the noise created by his inner circle and keeps it off. He'll be a much better player if he can do that.
