    Secret is out...

Jason Scheer ‏@JasonScheer Arizona commit Eric Cooper Jr. will play one more year of HS ball then reclassify to 2014 and go to prep school

What's the big secret Wildcat_Brad. Our VIPs have purchased the right to receive breaking news first, along with first account interviews from the interested parties.

I'm sure they gave proper credit as to who first reported the breaking news, right? Probably not, just like the news being tweeted late today regarding Arizona being first to offer Tyler Dorsey in the 8th Grade? Or was that read somewhere on this website in the VIP forums. I wonder.

  • Easy now...agreed vip has its priveleges. Poorly worded on my part...should have said...now public. There is a problem with this business model though...no way to control the info. It may be vip but in todays world you can wait 30min and get the news for free. In the end I think you have to deliver a quality product and hope advertising covers the cost. You guys certainly deliver on that end.

Fair enough, I'm definitely touchy though. I made a conscious decision to stop playing nice with everyone a few months back so it's not personal, just the horns come out these days way easier than before.

I agree about the advertising. Unfortunately, even the major news sites have seen decline in advertising funds in this economy.

I'll never get in the way of anyone's personal spending and financial budgets. The VIP fee is nominal, and I can insult everyone by saying something silly like "if you give up three Venti Vanilla Lattes a month you can afford our monthly subscription." Still, the daily cost for our website is literally 33 cents, which is incredibly economical.

One thing all should at least consider when deciding whether to subscribe or not (if you can afford it and like the product) is the fact that what we do requires actual work (time and energy). Brad and I dedicate 30-40 hours a week each to this website, and do the dirty work like actually call and contact recruits, travel to events, cover Arizona Athletics with media credentials, and so forth, and write stories and try our best to interact with the Arizona fans as much as possible.

Sometimes, how we choose to spend our money has more to do with supporting a good cause rather than only considering what we get in return.

*Regardless, sorry I snapped. The reason is although I subscribe to the theory that it's not who broke the news, but who covers the news the best, the Coop Jr. scoop was a bona fide breaking story and having the day-late twitter feed of a competing website being posted in a VIP story/thread on our site for a story that we broke definitely rubbed me the wrong way.

Bear Down, Wildcat_Brad, and sorry again.

  • Cooper Sr. is literally one of the nicest people on earth. I'm not exaggerating one bit. He was pretty amped up about his new team at St. Anthony. There's no over the top talent there right now, but my quotes from the interview talk about some of the differences Cooper likes compared to LaVerne Lutheran.

  • With three pay sites, a free site, a local newspaper and a great staff at the Tucson Citizen, it is tough for anyone to consistently break news and then "keep the secret." If you choose to pay for a site, what you have to do is see what works for you. We feel we have four standout writers and some great guest contributors. We also have a staff that has played the games, covered the games, reffed the games and even coached the games. I will hold our ability to report, analyze and evaluate with anyone. I would also put our staffs knowledge of the history of the program against anyone not named rickyk, Blk Mnt or jjones.

We've talked at length as a staff and we know the old ways of doing things just aren't enough to make people give you their hard earned dollars. We will still attempt to break news, but we also want to analyze the news. Whenever possible we won't just tell you there is a new commit, but we'll provide an analysis of what the commitment means to the program and, hopefully, a detailed scouting report on the player.

We are working on expanding our game coverage as well, giving subscribers and non-subscribers more analysis than ever before. Anyone can write abut rumors or report facts, we want to take you deeper into the story and I know we have the staff to do it (as well as the readers).

  • I pay for this site for the analysis you guys provide. Hearing about out breaking news is fine, but it is not really necessary. I also respect the professionalism displayed here and I know you guys would never do anything to hurt the program.

Yes on the parent company. It's a great idea, though, and I could easily see the industry moving in that direction in the future.

    Ditto.

I also like the commentating atmosphere. Professional and personable.

Trolls make me run the other direction. I just don't have the time for it.

  • This looks like a great move. Cooper would have come in and been behind Nick, Mayes, York and McConnell and possibly another 4-5 star Freshman (all but Mayes having at least 2 years to play). Now Nick and McConnell will be Seniors and York a Jr and Cooper will hopefully be in the 4 star range. The extra year should be highly beneficial to him. He could develop some PG skills and be an incredible backup for Miller in the 1 and 2 slot.
