UCLA was probably done in by a questionable technical. Go figure.
Doesn't change the fact that they are just embarrassing themselves to end the game.
Big Ten: 2
Pac 12: 0
And that was against the bottom tier.
Who's his replacement? I see Pastner as a great option.
Nothing against Pastner.
But I would think they would go after a name. They have the location and resources to pull it off.
I wouldn't have the slightest idea who. The coaching market is pretty thin right now imho.
I've got it.
You heard it here first,
If Howland is gone, their first two calls will be to Brad Stevens and Shaka Smart. I actually think Stevens stays at Butler as they are moving into a big time conference next year. The new Big East is a serious hoops conference.
Romar will lobby hard for that job.
Editor-In-Chief of Wildcat Sport Report and co-host of the Arizona football and basketball pre and postgame shows on 1490 and 104.9.
Agree with the top two.
Romar is just a baffling choice for me.
You don't think they would at least try to make a run at Few?
I agree...Brad isn't leaving. I don't see Shaka leaving either but if they got him...they would be damn good.
Rumor has it that Few was upset when he was not even interviewed or seen as a real candidate the last time.
That is amazing!!!
And probably the exact point in time that UCLA went sideways.
Could be an interesting development coming up then. Especially if the $$$ is offered.
Not much fly fishing but you would think deep-sea fishing is a nice replacement.
Would he make them cut their hair?
It's LA zip.
I'm guessing no.
Think Howland lost control of that program like that SI article said last year. He may have regained it, too little, too late.
The problem for UCLA, IMO, is who do they get that's more accomplished? That's been to four final fours in a row? Shaka Smart is great... for what, three seasons now? Brad Stevens said he'd never leave. So did Few and I'm sure Few has had similar bones thrown his way. Can't imagine them trusting the program to Pastner, he'd have a super short leash.
Romar? Really? How is he any better than Howland?
Why not go after a proven guy who's at one of the 1A schools like Donovan at Florida or Matta at Ohio State?
"Arizona has no tradition" - Bill Walsh
"We have a tradition of kicking Bill Walsh's ass" - Teddy Bruschi
The Bruins want a SEXY coach with Final Four and National Championship experience. They will pay the dollars for it. They have reached out to Pitino earlier this year as well as Billy Donovan. Supposedly, both have expressed interest. But they would be foolish to go to UCLA. The Bruins will wind up having to 'settle' with Brad Stevens.
Howland has probably cleaned out his office before he left for Austin. The Bruins losing make it much easier for UCLA to can Ben within the next couple days. If it takes that long.
Coaches available today are:
John Thompson III
Jeff Van Gundy
Stan Van Gundy
and Kevin O' Neil as The Beaver
I actually ran those names by my "thinking process".
You would think those schools could match offers based on the success of their football programs.
No, I think if UCLA was going to be serious, they would have to look at Pitino's salary and then reach out.

Phil Jackson would be a hell of a sexy choice.
Jeff Van Gundy as a close second. That would be hilarious though.
Phil Jackson on the recruiting trail? Not gonna happen.
A quote about the Ucla/Minn game from NBC Sports:
"The game was billed as the “Loser Loses His Job,” referring to the hot seat beneath both Minnesota coach Tubby Smith and UCLA coach Ben Howland, but we’ll have to see how off-season decisions pan out to see if that proves true. Early Twitter reports say Howland would not comment after the game on whether or not he had just coached his final game with the Bruins."
His lack of comment is telling, not even a "go to hell" statement.
facts bro... get them right. He's been to 3 final fours in a row. stop giving credit in places it shuldn't be and taking it away froom others.
Who did I take credit away from?
LOL at the questionable technical.
I said it before, I'll say it again...
That darn karma.
Contracts have been broken before, but it does not seem likely that Alford will leave just days after he signed a 10 year contract extension.
