Gabe York update

  • well it's been several hours since we've heard anything so I tweeted a buddy who's cousins best friends wife's aunt plays bridge with the best friend of a neighbor of Gabe's Mother.

Apparently he and a buddy walked to the corner store and bought some watermelon flavored gum, Gatorade and some Slim Jim's last night.

I don't want to read to much into this, but you load a kid like that up with sugar, electrolytes and protein and he can do almost anything!

Evidently a small pebble got lodged in his shoe, right on the heel of his left foot. He was able to stop and and take his shoe off and remove the small stone - but I was thinking that maybe someone should follow up and make certain the foot is fine.

    Wtf

Parody, sarcasm, self effacing humor re: the obsessive nature of our fascination with HS kids who can play BB.

  • You should not have used Gabe to do this piece of sarcasm. This kid just survived a horrible accident, this was poor taste.

  • WK parody is fine but player chosen not good

  • The simple fact that we even know he was in an accident is the entire damn point....it's too much.

  • If you're going to make light of a situation, at least don't pick on a 6-2 guard that actually boxes out when rebounding.

  • Pretty sure he's not making fun of gabe york. I think he's ribbing the guy reporting on York's every move. Not that I mind it at all... I love reading recruiting news.. or news about our recruits.

I think you're right. Unfortunately, Brad and I can't win in this stuff. If we don't report everyone asks why. When we do others don't care. The ironic thing is a year from now after Brad and I are done breaking down all the Arizona recruits and give the good and bad on each kid, we'll get complaints that they're "overhyped" even though we've accurately detailed all their weaknesses in addition to their strengths.

  • Why not spread the love and get some coverage of the other recruits? I'm pretty sure we have 3 HIGHER RANKED recruits coming in as well that we'd all like to hear about too. I know I would. I agree with Ben, I love reading news about bball recruits and you guys are one of the best in the biz but I haven't heard much about Zeus, Grant or BrAsh lately.

Speaking of recruits, the Mickey D's game is Wednesday night at 730pm if you want to catch some future AZ Wildcats go against other top talent.

  • Gary I love your (Brad and You) coverage. It is balanced and objective. We need to be careful withour expectations. I believe Gabe is the third best prospect in our class behind Grant and Zeus and yet nationally Ashley gets thee most love. I suspect at most one of them starts next year but all four should contribute. Those that do not like to read about recruits should just not reaad the stories but those of us that like them come here to read the material.

One of my State of Program segments will be on all four current recruits.

Honestly, the other 3 haven't made much news this year, if any. Ashley is just one component of a deep Findlay Prep team. Jerrett had a fine season, but nothing off the charts. Zeus had a strong season but communication is just not there and the local Mass. press has provided next to nothing on high school games this year so tough to follow.

In order of college ready IMO (pure impact player):

    Gabe York
    Kaleb Tarczewski
    Grant Jerrett
    Brandon Ashley

I have some concerns with Ashley as an impact player next season. He's going to be good and will contribute, and hopefully defy my tempered expectations, but a lot of that has to do with what he does with his body and his game in the next 8 months.

He doesn't need to add muscle (bulk), but must add strength to do what Arizona is going to require of him, which is along the lines of a hybrid forward that plays away from the basket. Still, defensively, he'll need to become more of a banger and help out on the glass and that takes strength, not just hops.

    Gary,

I enjoy reading the recruiting pieces and everyone can form their own expectations. So please keep writing them!

As for the sarcasm, I think it is in very poor taste to mock someone or make light of the situation when it was a serious accident and the mom was in the hospital. Not necessary at all. If they don't like your reporting then say so outright.

  • One reason Gary has reported the most on York, is that he has been the easiest for Gary to reach in Southern California. Though very public through Twitter, Ashley has not really wanted to talk a whole lot and both Jerrett and Zeus can be private at times. York's mom really appreciated some of Gary's early stories on Gabe and has been very open and forthcoming with Gary.

  • I'm sorry Gary. you guys are in a tough spot. no matter how much you say it is never enough for some and way too much for others. I did not mean to disparage your efforts - whihc are always great!

I also was not, in any way, making fun of Gabe York.

We are all part of a culture of instantaneous information about these HS recruits and maybe we should just let the kid be a kid a little bit.
