Holiday Weekend

  • I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend, and for those heathens not celebrating any religious holidays I hope you're weekend was wonderful too. clap

*Kidding about the "heathens" thing, of course.

I just got back from my fun-filled holiday with family. This week we'll try and clear up the basketball recruiting picture, see who commits (or already committed) or doesn't and on and on.

If there's any transfers on the horizon, sadly the transfers will do more damage than the commits bring to the table but we'll have to wait and see how it goes.

  • Gary Matt Korcheck has committed to arizona.

I am confused by this comment....are you saying that you know something specific you cannot discuss or speaking in general terms?

In general terms, the right transfer out and the right commit coming in could be a great thing, right?

  • Well I do have to say something about these 2 guys coming in and how it might hurt now. From the things i have read Matt wants to redshirt this coming year so that means he will not be helping out during games but can help out in practice. TJ has to sit out next year due to transfer rules.

So both of these guys can help out in practice but not on the court next year. So we will have to wait and see what happenes. Then if JT or Mayes leaves we will need gaurd help next year and this does not help that situation.

    Just my opinion

  • I think the ideal situation for next season would be to get both of these guys on the roster... let Matt red-shirt and have them both start being contributors the following season. In order for this to happen, one person on scholarship would have to leave the program or give up their schoarship. In a best-case scenario, the person leaving would be a person who wouldn't have been counted on to be a contributor. I see that as being Kyryl at this point. Its tough to lose a guy who is going ot be a senior. But lets be honest. He's not going to contribue. Last season he had a huge opportunity to play the post for a team without any other options. With his as our only option... the staff decided to play without a post player. This year we'll have options... even though they are just freshmen. But they'll still be better options than Kyryl.

  • Ben J, all that goes to pot if Alex Jacobsen's evil plan to extend his eligibility to 8 years remains successful. Rumor has it he'll soon be filing a claim to the NCAA of suffering post traumatic stress syndrome after Lute Olson took leave and then retired from the program and having to endure the instabilty it caused.

  • No secrets wineknow. It's just that classes are still in session and Arizona is close to connecting with McConnell and if so then someone needs to transfer or leave basketball entirely. As pointed out, redshirting or sitting out a season due to transfer doesn't not exclude that player from counting against the amount of available scholarships so if Korcheck is in and McConnell is soon to be next then we need a current roster player to fall off.

Further, it seems that Amadeo's visit is still on the schedule so that would make Arizona +2 if they were to accept his commitment.

While I agree on the lack of performance by some current roster players, it's not like UA is bringing in the solution(s). It really looks like we're trading a fuji apple for a braeburn apple. I've read in other threads that the four incoming freshman haven't proven anything and a guy like Korcheck is nice insurance. Well, maybe, but Korcheck hasn't proven anything yet either.

I'm not trying to knock anyone or anything. If some player personnel shake ups add to and improve team chemistry I'm all for it, and Korcheck, who was about 6'7 coming out of high school is reportedly around 6'9 now so that's nice size and muscle to bang on the freshmen while trying to improve himself.

  • The counter argument, though, is let's assume Turner stays and plays next season. Arizona will then have 7 underclassmen on the roster with probably 3 as starters (Turner, Johsnon and one of the freshman). That's a very young team so any college-level experience, even JUCO, is good for the club and does provide some insurance against any surprise NBA departures following next season.

  • what is amazing is that we could see 7 new players added to the roster this year...WTF that is Kentucky level turnover with the wins...part of what I love about ncaa hoops is watching guys develop not something happening a lot with Miller so far.

  • How would all this affect the APR? If that drops, doesn't that also affect the # of scholies?

  • Heathens??? I went to Palm Desert for the night...no I did not attend the White Out...or whateve the pricesses call it in Palm Springs. T alk about Heathens ! ! ! !

    Mrzipityduda

  • As long as those leaving are good standing on theeir academiccs it does not harm the APR, KNAT is rumlored to graduate this summer and is our best student. Josiah may have issues.

I don't agree with this Liver, but maybe Gary and Brad have statistics on it. I think DW, Hill, Fogg, Parom before he was shot, Perry did pretty good under Miller's coaching.

Agreed, I think the majority of the roster has improved from season to season. K-Nat's inability to develop, even if the coaches are to blame here, jumps off the map so high because his lack of development left a huge hole in the middle of the paint. Hence, it overshadows the development of those Peb names, as well as Brendon Lavender and Jesse Perry.

One lesson we learned in college basketball this past seasons is it's difficult to play a high major D1 schedule with a roster (height and size) more geared for the mid-major level.

What's nice is Arizona, literally overnight, will go from the smallest team in the Pac-12 to the biggest.

  • I did not mean to imply Miller doesn't develop his players what I meant was a lot of guys are not sticking around for me to watch develop. We have ASU level of turnover right now.

    liver97

  • I think you guys are all looking gift horse in the mouth!

Yes we have turnover but how on earth is it bad to replace empty roster spots? I don't care if we have to replace everyone, if we have open spots, we need to fill them. Can't do anything about the fact that it's a high number, so let's move on.

    1. Ask the big guy to play this coming year - we WILL NEED HIM - none of the freshmen will be able to play as well or be as developed physically or emotionally as he is, every year at that age is huge and he's two years older. Then redshirt him when the more talented kids are Sophomores. By the time he's a senior, they'll be in the NBA and we've got a great, long term, stabilizing force.

    2. You guys forget that championships at Arizona were not solely won by stars, but rather by journeyman types who logged huge minutes and were as good at their supporting roles (sometimes better) than our stars were at their roles. What has been desperately missing form Wildcat Basketball for nearly a decade are the Jud Buechlers, Bennet Davisons, Gene Edgersons, Justin Wessels, Raye Owes, Anthony Cooks.... those are the guys we won league championships with - it wasn't just Elliott and Stoudamire and Reeves and Mills and Jefferson....it's the fact that Lute had 5-8 other guys every year that were awesome at their roles.

    3. You also forget than some of our stars were journeymen for a few years before they were stars. Sean Rooks or Michael Dickerson, Hassan Adams for example. Honestly, I think Solomon Hill fits this category, so did Kyle Fogg. TJ and the kid who's name I don't know how to spell are 1st team all pac-12 in three years, then we'll have given some great stability to the program. Sounds to me like TJ is well ahead of where Fogg was at a similar age.

At this pint, IMO, we are desperate for decent players who can simply contribute. We have 6 or 7 roster players (added two in March) who cannot contribute to a PAC-12 game. I am not unappreciative of them but isn't it better to have some players in their spots who can contribute and maybe have far greater upside than the Weipkings of the world?
