How Does This Guy Not Fit The Arizona Recruit Paradigm?

  • Perhaps he may be too well grounded where that may not mix well with the current team?

  • Derksen is a great player and a great kid, but lacks the athleticism to play at the high major level.

  • Kerr proved to be athletic enough. Not saying Derksen could not play at this level, but he does not look like a Pac-12 player.

  • we will have an answer as we follow his career at a mid major school...

seems like a great kid and hope he does very well...

  • There was all state guard at Catalina in 83 and 84 who was like 4'5" but could hit from anywhere and handled the ball really well - can't recall his name but I am sure he didn't make it in division 1. Still he was a deadly shot. Wong maybe?

Brad, we don't want Pac-12 type players, we want players that could play for teams in other conferences. The Pac-12 stinks.

    Sorry, I couldn't help it.

  • Plus Kerr had one world class skill, his outside shot.

  • Hey WINE...Sabino HS has a white short PG when you were going there...do you remember who that was? I know Lute came to see him as did Kevin.

Mike DiChristafano was our starting point guard and he was solid and a great guy but I doubt we had anyone that D1 schools thought much of. John Poates, our center went to central Arizona if I recall correctly on BB scholarship. My buddy Steve Bauer was an amazing shooting guard when he was hot, but again, no way he was tall enough to play D1.

The game today is not what it was in the late 80's. Kerr probably would be the backup PG/SG on a team now. That being said Kerr's shot and BB I.Q. were off the charts.

IMO the perception that Kerr was not an athlete is ridiculous.

He's white and he's not blazingly fast. But the fact is he averaged over 20 minutes per night with the Bulls during the heyday of their championships. He is an excellent Basketball player by any standard - 18 years in the NBA!

Just to be able to be on the court with NBA players for 18 years, makes you and athlete, no matter how you cut it.

I also don't think he'd be back up today - you forget he was a very complete player. Steals, assists, A:TO ratio, he committed almost no fouls.... there is no Arizona team since we had Arenas and Gardner that would not have started Kerr, and I'm not certain Gardner would get the nod over Kerr.

  • Where did I say Kerr was not an athlete? A: Nowhere

Kerr was not ATHLETIC enough to start in the NBA. He was the backup PG for the Bulls, because of his LACK of athleticism. Kerr himself has said he was not athletic and probably would not make it today. And he's said it many times. He had an incredible career for someone so slow and with a 10 inch vertical.

Most golfers, pre-Tiger era, were athletes, but not exactly athletic. You get paid or go to the Olympics in any sport and you're an athlete, heck a 5 foot 300 pounder who plays hoops on the weekend is technically an athlete. But it does not make you athletic, at least by the definition used by the media, scouts, etc.

Kerr averaged about 1 steal per game at AZ and 1/2 a steal in the NBA. He did have a 4:1 A:TO ratio at AZ (3:1 NBA), but he only averaged 2 Assists in the NBA and 4 in college. He averaged about 1 foul per 18 minutes in the NBA, but he only averaged 1 drive to the basket a week.

I would take Kerr over any PG we've ever had. He has always been my favorite basketball player here. Heck he was my favorite Wildcat until Taryne Mowatt came along. I just don't think coaches today in Div 1 would play him.

  • BP - my comment about athleticism was directed at everyone, not you specifically, sorry.

Kerr may have been throwback, even for when he played, but I gotta believe a good coach would recognize his value and use him.

  • Wineknow, as the story goes......

"Steve Kerr wasn't really recruited by anyone, and planned to try to be a walk-on at Colorado or Cal-State Fullerton. Olson was brand new in Arizona, and thought he was slow, not athletic, and would have trouble playing at the college level. "But for some reason I was intrigued by him." Kerr was a low priority, and Olson was focused on other things and didn't get back to the Kerrs. Eventually Steve's dad called Olson and asked if there was a scholarship for his son. Against the judgment of Olson's wife and others, he said "yes." Of course, Kerr ended up being one of the great heroes of Arizona basketball history and an NBA champion."
