Korcheck to visit UA

  • davidpk19 said...

I think that the following three players are now gone: KN, Mayes and even Josiah Turner. We have taken Korcheck and we will take JT McConnell. We may also take ADV. It is going to be a whole new roster of players for next season.

If we lose both Turner and Mayes then we are without a single PG on the roster for next year. TJ doesn't impact either player this next year so both could stay and play if KNat leaves.

  • its not good to lose players with experience and replace them with players with no experience. I really hope Jordin Mayes and Josiah Turner return for next season. Kyryl is the least likely to contribute next season so I don't think the team will suffer if he decides to go to europe and play some pro ball a season early. I have a hard time imagining him having enough value to get a pro contract, but apparently they love him over there. He did well for the Ukrane national team a few seasons ago... just can't get it going for the Cats. Maybe its best he decides to peace out while he is still considered to have a lot of potential.

  • So I thought that with a coaching change a player could transfer without having to sit out a year. Wouldn't that be the case for TJ Mcconnell since Duquesne fired their coach this year? What am I missing here?

  • got this from a transfer FAQ...

Q: If my coach leaves, can I transfer and immediately be eligible?
No. Contrary to popular belief, the departure of a coaching staff member does not grant a
student-athlete relief from the residence requirement on transferring.

I was in the "popular belief" category. Guess I was misinformed. Thx Liver.

  • CY,

I think you could be thinking about if a coach gets fired and I think the recruits can leave. ie, DWill, Momo, and Solo. My guess is that if they have signed but not enrolled they can leave if the coach is gone. But once they are enrolled they have to sit out a year. That is just my guess. But then i could be wrong.

You're right. For now, there's nothing substantial pointing to any current roster player leaving. Everything is speculation.

I'll admit, talking to sources regarding Turner during the Pac-12 Tournament, I didn't come across a single source, former Wildcat player, whatever, who though Turner would be on the team this upcoming season. Still, there's nothing concrete that points to his departure although many (at least in the back of their mind) think Turner has an uphill battle.

Everyone thinks K-Nat is going to Europe. However, they forget how much K-Nat loves college. Personally, I can't see him leaving until he has his degree. That said, I've heard that K-Nat is pulling a Josh Pastner and is close to earning his degree if he hasn't already (May or this summer).

Jordin Mayes is very plausible, only because he's a good kid with game and could easily transfer to another school and actually play and contribute and possibly carve out a professional career. That said, if Turner leaves and Mayes stays he's our starting point guard next season.

  • Turner is such a huge risk that I don't see the staff brining him back if he so much as screws up one class this spring. Mayes wants to be a staarting pg and if TJ is coming I could see him bolting. In essence if Turner can't keep his head on straight we are going to be very thin at gaurd next year. I can see a senario where it is Nick and Gabe at the 1, Nick, Gabe and KP at the 2 with no depth whatsover. Maybe you add ADV to that group but it is still all SG's an no PG's.

  • I can't imagine we'd lose both Josiah Turner and Jordin Mayes. I could see one leaving... Jordin for a chance to start somewhere else, and JT2 because he's worn out his welcome. But there doesn't seem to be any reason for both to leave the program. If JT2 bolts, then Jordin is the starter. If Jordin takes off, then the staff will focus on Turner and follow that up with McConnell during the 2013-14 season.

  • I think Jordin would see TJ coming and fear losing his starting job his senior year. Kids have bolted for less.
Turner thinks he is going to the NBA so he likely could care less about TJ. However, Turner might not have a choice so I could easily see the staff telling him to leave and Mayes also leaving.

Liver, you could be right but a kid with his head on right and confidence in his skills should compete, sports is about competing. You can see a lot about a person when you play sports with them. The inside person comes out pretty quickly and i want someone who is willing to compete and has confidence in their own ability and a realistic assessment of it. AZ is D1 at the highest level and to go somewhere else for that reason says they cannot make it here.

    My thoughts!

  • The one that really bothers me is Mayes. Seems like a nice kid from a great family, though his sulking during the PAC 12 tournament was piss poor. I wonder if his foot is not going to heal 100%. Turner made his bed and KNAT did not give 100% during the offseasons so I have no problem with those two being forced out.
