Mark Lyons to visit Arizona, Kentucky and Kansas

  • The 2012 season has certainly been a "recruit of the week" session since we seemed to have the original 4 in the fold. I sure don't see anything wrong with this one. A seasoned Quality senior ball player should be in demand everywhere.

  • Might be kind of early to know, but is there a time frame as to when he will visit?

  • Well he's a Sociology major, any idea what graduate programs he's thinking about?

  • I'm hearing that Lyons could actually graduate on time and be at Arizona as soon as late June along with the four freshman. That would be an incredible turn around. It's amazing the parallels between Arizona and UCLA right now. Both have signed elite classes, both are getting elite transfers and on and on. Perhaps the earth has finally found its way back on its axis, the stars have aligned and Holly Sonders is coming over tonight.

Wouldn't we all be sooo lucky!

So is it a given that AZ is where he is headed? Kind of what I got from your post.

  • I had to slip the Holly comment in there, it was teed up for me.

As jjones has pointed out with the academic considerations, it sounds like only a hiccup along those lines would prevent him from coming to Arizona. The scholarship is there for him, and it's only a one year arrangement anyway so it couldn't be a more perfect fit.

I feel bad for Mayes, but him sliding to the 2-guard while also serving as backup PG isn't exactly the worst thing in the world. We should see a wide variety of lineups from Miller this season, playing big, going small (3 guards), and all sorts of combinations so it should make for an interesting year.

  • Nothing's 100% though. Lyons spent time at Brewster Academy, as did current Jayhawk (and one of my favorite 2011 PG prospects) Naadir Tharpe.

  • If you're going to slip in Holly Sonders (comments), you could at least change your avatar. cool

p.s. we need a golf emoticon in honor Holly and the wonderful ladies of AZ golf. (Gulbis, Baena, Sorenstam, et al.)

  • I saw somewhere where he and Kevin Parrom are real close. That should be another key advantage for us.

  • Wow, its news to me that they even have graduate programs at Kentucky. That there book learnin' must be catching on.

  • Is this kid even a PG? Tu Holloway was the PG last season for Xavier. Mark Lyons actually only had 2.8 assists per game last year, compared to 2.2 turnovers. Not exactly PG-type numbers. Especially considering he was in his 4th year in the system over there.

Seems more like a 2-guard who wants to play PG, but his coach knows he's not a PG so he's gonna transfer to a school where he can play PG. Honestly... I like that he's a monster on the defensive side of the ball, but isn't NJ supposed to be our combo-guard next year? Sure, we can use him. But I'm not 100% sure he's even a point guard. In fact, I'm thinking he's actually NOT a point guard.
Still a good pickup though. We've got a schollie and he's got one year to use it. I like the pickup. But I don't think he's gonna be our answer at the 1.

  • He is not a pure PG, but has played PG and is a good ball handler. His Asst to TO ration is not great, 2.7/2.2 and he makes curious decisions. That being said, he played PG in HS, was recruited as a PG and has a desire to play PG. He'd be good alongside the Wildcats' other three guards, who are all combos as well. He is also a proven scorer, who can create his own shot and he's a tremendous defender.

Not the end all be all at the point, but I think he upgrades the position.

I think you answered your own question there. IMO, Tu Holloway is the main reason Lyons didn't really get any time at the point. I mean, who you starting - Holloway or Lyons? No knock on Lyons. I hope he picks our Wildcats.

  • Of note, Kentucky has NC State transfer Ryan Harrow coming in next year to play the one.
