Lyons or Mayes

  • Ok...done deal...Lyons is coming...

Who starts at PG next year...the Senior transfer or the guy with 2 years experience in the system?

I really haven't seen Lyons play much other than when he went all Rocky Balboa...

Any thoughts from those in the know? thanks....

  • Most here love Mayes. he is still unproven. If Mayes is healthy and plays like he did yearrrs ago...it will be Very
interesting. I have no problem with Mayes starting...that would mean that he is doing damn good....and to have Lyons come off the bench...wow.
But I fear that Lyons will edge Mayes.

  • Play whoever is better.

I like Mayes for his calm leadership. IMO he is under rated.

Haven't seen Lyons but I'm all for him starting if he can win the position.

  • Lyons is a way better defender so I think he gets the nod.

Agreed. Lyons is the better defender, as well as the more proven scorer. In short, Lyons is the better player right now. Don't worry about Mayes, though, he'll get his minutes in Miller's system if he earns them whether it be as a backup PG or in the wing rotation (likely combination of both).

  • Yeh I have to go with Lyons here and agree with those that his defense will be the determining factor. It will help that he has the ability to get into the paint and finish or create for others as well. His toughness will definitely be a plus for AZ no doubt about that.

  • If both guards are sooooo equal, I can envision a symbiontic tag-team type of point guard paradigm. One plays until he shows fatigue, underplays once or misses a shot.

Miller could, with impunity, switch players until the guard on the court knocks himself off.

It could possibly feed itself into excellence.

  • I kind of got a kick out of beat Oregon's "Rocky Balboa" reference. This past team didn't have a lot of swagger. Too much can be too much, but a little "Momo" at the right time or Parrom's look at the ASU game his first year can do good things. Williams, as a sophomore" exuded swagger in that the expectation, delivering the deal, then the look afterwards told a story of confidence no one else in the league could match.

I don't believe in a lot of chest beating, but a look of confidence from a leader can carry a team. Before you can have that look you need to know that you can deliver and deliver with impunity. If Lyons can do the deal, and then have that attitude without clenching his fists or saying something stupid, it could do wonders and take a load off of Hill who does his work quietly. This past year, the only one on the court who showed that kind of an attitude was CSM. In other words, this team needs a leader who doesn't necessarily score or rebound more, but has an air of intimidation about him. It should make life easier on the freshmen also.

  • There is no question. You think he picked Arizona over KY and Kansas with no certainty from Miller? This isn't how it works in bringing in a transfer.

Lyons starts at the point from day one. No controversy, no issues. This guy averaged more ppg than anyone we had on the roster. No one can make a serious case for him not being the starting point guard.

Proven commodity who wants to play point guard. If I were Sean Miller, I'd just roll the ball to him and say "this is your team."

Mayes will provide effective backup at 2 spots. And he'll be happy doing it. If he's smart.

This is a very important but subtle point.

As much as we missed production from Parrom, maybe this is where we missed him the most. And like you say, he does not have to play physical, thump his chest or talk trash, all he has to do is carry himself confidently.

    Great point.

I agree on Parrom, although I'd say he does need to play physical and be the guy that opponents hate to face because they know at some point they're going to get fouled hard or have Parrom diving at their feet for a loose ball.

All things being equal (i.e. blank slate for Arizona with no injuries to start the season) the entire team should be much more tenacious on the court than last year's squad. If the tenacity can hold up the Cats will be a nightmare for finesse teams.

Which is exactly what Howland has turned his team into, a finesse team that doesn't run

  • I dont think, but hope I am wrong, but JM was a tad slow on the D and may have caused us a win at one point. I agree, unless JM has an apiphany then it is a back up role.

    Mrzipityduda

  • Mayes helped us as a freshman because he was a combo guard that could backup the point and knock down jumpers. As a sophomore, he was a few steps slow due to the injuries and completely lost his jump shot. I don't know if it was a confidence thing or the injury but he only shot 35% from the field and 29% from three last year. Numbers like that forced Miller to recruit over Mayes with Lyons and O'Connell. Lyons is the starting point and his arrival will reduce the minutes for Nick and Jordin. Luckily, those two guys seem to be team-first types and our team will benefit overall by having a kid that has been to 3 straight Sweet 16's as our point guard.
