Miller Feeling The Heat?

  • I believe this is the first time in Miller's tenure at Arizona that there are going to be significant PRESEASON EXPECTATIONS for his team.

Many experts are saying this is a top 10-15 level team on talent alone.

How will this Arizona team and SM respond to this new position they find themselves in...embrace it and get some swagger or choke and fold???

  • He better get used to it fast because from now on there is no more bubble talk only seed talk. No more are we in, but how far are we going to go.

  • I agree fellas. While I feel that last season came with some legitimate reasons for setback, we're now heading into our 4th season under Miller where excuses are officially off the table. The staff has done a fine job in recruiting and building depth at all five positions so the program should now be able to overcome common setbacks in hoops (i.e. minor injuries, a player struggling, etc) and still win at a clip high enough to make the Dance and be competitive for a league title.

  • Last year we were ranked in the pre-season but CSM was very clear with the media that the team didn't deserve to be ranked so highly. Hopefully this team deserves its lofty ranking. Hopefully it continues to improve throughout the year and ends up being very good at the end of the year.

  • We can't do anything about the schedule this year, it is what it is, we will just have to make the tourney on our own merits...

As for Miller feeling heat, Yes I think he now has to produce at an Arizona good level... I think he relishes the challenge and will make us all proud....

So here are my predictions for 2012-2013...

    1. We will be an absolutely killer defensive team, Lyons, NJ, Solo and KP will be able to apply pressure knowing that there are bigs who can defend the paint... Steals will be way up, as we will be able to jump passing lanes without worrying about being beat out front...

    2. We will average 10pts more per game than we did last season... We will run more as we won't have to send 5 to the boards... An inside / outside presence will make it hard for any team to try and make us one dimensional, like they all did towards the end of the season we just endured...

    3. We will beat UCLA twice next year... At home and in the tournament...

    4. We will win the PAC 12 season and the Conference Tournament too...

    5. We will be at worst a 3 seed...

    6. We will make it to the elite Eight...

    Bear Down.... rockon

I hear GB is going to petition the NCAA to let us play home games with copper Bballs hoops

    I agree with everything here.
the elite 8 is what this team should accomplish with the talent we have. the final 4 is over and the sweet 16 would be an under performance for this team.

Aim higher....Elite 8 and then the FINAL 4
Very good points. this will not be a one dimensional team.
We can go tall, fast, stuff the middle, shot freely from out side...etc...this team should be able to do t all.

  • I expect we will make the tournament with the "extra" Senior in Lyons being on board. I think the talent is there for a good tournament run, but with 4 Freshmen, 2 Sophomores and an as yet unproven Junior in the 10 man rotation, not to mention 1 of your Seniors is coming back from a miserable year from both injury and emotionally you just shouldn't "expect" getting past the first weekend. IMO, the sweet spot is making the Sweet 16. Once you survive the first weekend, anything can happen.

Lute would have never survived a decade let alone two if the school castrated him every time he lost in the first round.

In a one-and-done format, and with so much parity among the 68 teams that make the tournament, unfortunately anything can happen these days. Even Duke isn't immune to early tourney losses anymore.

One thing I've noticed from Miller is he embraces tournament play, and more importantly knows how to coach in tournament settings. Last year's NIT was a joke as everyone in Tucson knew the Wildcats didn't want to be there. That aside, Miller's teams have gone to the Pac-10/12 title game two years in a row and had an Elite 8 NCAA run.

My guess, based on what I've seen from Miller and his Cats, if Arizona is indeed legitimate this season, they'll do some damage in the conference and NCAA tournaments again.

  • I agree 100% Gary. I brought this up in another thread a couple of weeks ago. Miller seems to know how to coach in tourneys. In addition to your references with UA, he also has a couple of sweet 16's and an elite 8 with Xavier. I would consider all of those runs to be over achievements based on the teams he had. Even our team two years ago with WIlliams was an over achievement. No one picked us to be one shot away from the final four only to lose to the eventual national champion.

If next years team is what we think they are, I am pretty confident we will make a little run. Miller doesn't seem to be the kind of coach that will have many first round exits.

Gary this is a complete Straw Man, I am basing my opinion on Miller's performance from the time he got here. Never once did I call for Olson to be fired after we lost in the first round. If all he manages to achieve in 4 years is 1 elite 8 with the the #2 pick in the draft then he deserves to get some serious heat. He has missed the tournament twice and with the talent he has this year he better survive the first round.

  • Liver, I too think that the time for excuses is now over... But as you must of noted in my previous post, I am a firm believer that we will make a run and get to the Elite Eight...

However the true measure of where Miller is taking us will be in the improvement the team makes from their Bahama trip to our level of play in late February... I am willing to make friendly bets that we will have improved by leaps and bounds by the time the PAC 12 tourney comes around...

As Gary stated, anything can happen in a one and done format (We have proven that more times than I wish to remember) I just don't see this team being an underachiever come tourney time...

We are a MUCH better team now than we were this last year... We were NOT a good team last year... We now have a full roster with multiple pieces at every position... We will have some early growing pains and missteps, but again, February play will be the true barometer....

So if we finish below asu and fail to make the tourney, then I will hand you the torch and we will clean house together...

  • I was done with Miller for missing the tourney last season. Three years and we should have stabilized. We should have had a competent big man, we should be able to keep a starting PG for more than a season. We had four recruits at that point and as good as they were - he seems to only actually get 1/2 of his recruits into uniforms and then 1/2 of them bail or flake out.

Something DRASTIC needed to be done and something was. 8 new players. Dead weight was booted to make room for real players (or potentially real). I did not expect any of it. I just assumed Miller was brain dead, and punch drunk after the hits he took (some of them self imposed like at ASU) last year, but I was wrong. He took steps to fix some of the issues.

To be honest, I don't trust Hill, Parrom and Johnson have the heart necessary to win. If they can't care about an at home NIT game against not a single player that will ever play 1 second of professional basketball on any level, why should I think they would care about the NCAA? Miller is clearly unconcerned about reaching the tourney until he proves otherwise and runs a zone defense for three minutes at ASU that could have turned that game around or recruits an actual big man when he needs one and not three years too late. The NIT game was the limpest, lamest I have ever seen this team play and if they didn't want to be there, they should not have taken the bid.

But Miller got busy and took some drastic action. I think we'll struggle to make the tourney this year and doubt that we get past the second game if we do. A team with two returning starters ranked 10th is ludicrous - it just shows the sorry state of college hoops.

I am optimistic but cautious and Miller has my support but not 1 centimeter of leeway. No bad losses this season can happen because we have almost no potential for a good win (our league and schedule are pathetic).

  • The problem is the assumption that Arizona was so-called "Arizona Good" when Miller arrived. It wasn't.

Like others, though, I believe this is the year the real test of can Miller lead an Arizona program back to being a perennial winner and contender begins. He has the pieces in place, as well as 7 new players to shape as he sees fit. In short, this is officially his program now top to bottom.

Agreed in that with this group enough wins should be doable for a tourney bid. Without the hype and target that Lute's teams often did, a first round flame out isn't likely. IMO though, expecting an Elite 8 or Final 4 with only 1 proven Wildcat is a bit much. I think the talent is there for a potential run to the last weekend, but it just is not such a given. Solo is the ONLY known quantity in the 10 deep.

Is KP healthy? - No one knows yet.
Can Lyons really run the point? - Probably, but he has 9 new guys to learn how to play with ASAP.
Mayes? - Totally unproven going into his Jr year. He has had what 3 really good games in 2 years?
Nick? - Will he find a jumper this summer? Ok, he's proven to be solid other than his jumper, but we need more than solid from him.
Chol? - Based on his growth last year and that the biggest gains are Frosh to Soph he should be better.
The 4 Frosh???? - They're Freshmen! Will they be Kentucky-esque or typical or somewhere in between????

That's a lot of question marks to EXPECT a deep run, IMO.

  • Blake,
I agree with most of what you said, except I'd say that we have three proven players on the team.

Lyons has averaged over 15 points per game and gone to multiple sweet 16's and won multiple conference championships. He's also practiced for a year in CSM's system. Seems like a very known quantity.

Also, I'd add NJ to the proven players category. We know he plays very solid defense. We know he's got a ton of athletecism. We know he's a decent scorer. With just those known traits, he's proven to be a very valuable rotation player. He's not going to get worse. He very well could get even better.

Those two guys, along with Solo are the only known quantities on the team. Everything else is based on projections and wishful thinking. That being said, i still fully expect us to be really good next year.

On a side note, I wonder if Miller is going to play that same pack defense now that we've got a stable of quality bigs manning the painted area. Maybe he could extend it a bit and get a few more steals and transition points. It would be fun to watch our guys average more than 69.8 points per game.

  • Ben J,

No on the pack defense from what I'm hearing. Lyons is an excellent defender, as is Nick Johnson. Even if they get beat off the dribble 90% of the time it WON'T be of the blow-by variety, meaning the defense should have time to rotate and at least offer help.

I'm being told Miller wants to be aggressive on the perimeter and go back to baiting opponents into certain areas on the floor, specifically the elbow areas and the mid baseline to push ball handlers into his designed help and the teeth of his defense while relying on shot blockers to protect the rim as a last defense.

Even if all three frosh big men struggle, Chol should be in a much better physical condition to serve as that last line of shot blocking defense this year. The hope is Zeus can at least be a defensive and rebounding force too.

Gary - you must have missed the memo. Please update your calendar from 2010 to 2012!

3 years to land a big man. Every team we played had at least one (and most had multiple) competent big men. We did not. Not sure we even tried to recruit one but I have to believe that guy willing to go to Colorado or Mississippi State or SDSU will come to AZ instead.

3 years to stabilize the PG position.

While I am not assuming that that we were Arizona good when Miller arrived, I think it is reasonable to expect that we should not be starting from scratch at four positions on the floor (whichever four that Hill is not playing) at the beginning of the fourth year. We should not have to scramble to bring in 8 (counting Hazzard, right?) new players and somehow magically hope they will take us to the sweet 16 or beyond. When does it end? When dare we hope that we are on the path back to Arizona good? It is certainly not before we have a proven point guard who stays more than a season or two, not before we have a center who has actually shown he can play NCAA BB, not before we find a 'shooting' guard who can shoot....
