  • Lakers I am a little better with than Mavs or Spurs.

    darkhand44

  • No (Suns fan in the house), but I am a happy Lakers fan today!

    CYCAT

  • I'm an excited Laker fan today! Nash, Kobe, Meta World Peace, Pau, Andrew Bynum. That's a strong line up. I heard they're trying to add Grant Hill to the mix. he could come off the bench and add some decent versatility. Lakers could be in the Western Conference Finals next year.

  • Yep, ditto to my fellow Laker fans. I also heard Nash was trying to bring Hill with him. I'm not sure that puts them over OKC but it's a GREAT pickup nonetheless and I wouldn't be surprised to see it come down to LA/OKC in WCF next year.

Grant Hill's almost a done deal as far as I understand it. I'm not a Suns fan, but as unlikely as it is to actually happen I'm salivating at the dream of a Celtics/Lakers Finals with Nash vs. Rondo and Mamba vs. Truth.

  • Suns...you mean the second best basketball team in the state of Arizona...hoops

    Who cares about those guys!hoops

  • I am not a Suns fan but there sure are a lot here in Phoenix and they are in crisis. My favorite team when youn the Knicks and then later I liked San Antonio when Sean was with hem. Robert Sarver may be the most hated man in Phoenix right now.

  • I'm a Suns' fan and have been since their infancy.

Corky Calhoun, Charlie Scott, Neil Walk, Connie "The Hawk" Hawkins, Clem Haskins and Al McCoy with "Hot Rod" Hundley with the call.

The Suns have been friends of the Wildcats since Lute Olson arrived.

Say what you want about Jerry Colangelo, but he was a main protagonist in having the State of Arizona emerge out of a sports backwater to what is is today.

    .
"Moving forward means reaching out to Jerry Colangelo, and it is hoped, the governor has already placed that call. Colangelo is most responsible for transforming a dusty desert outpost into a major metropolis. He is our only match for Jerry Jones, the Cowboys owner whose stadium stages the Cotton Bowl and is the man plotting our demise at this very moment."

"Colangelo doesn't have the time to run another franchise. But in 1968, his Suns were the first contributor to the Fiesta Bowl, donating $5,000 to get the concept off the ground. The state needs his vision and Rolodex all over again, and on Thursday he said he'd do whatever he can to help. After all, he bristles more than anyone at our diminishing status as a sports market. This was once his empire."

"I love this community," Colangelo said. "We strived very hard to be recognized around the country as a major-league market. When things happen that shed a negative light on our reputation, yeah, I take it personally. Because I care."

    .
BTW, as a 12 year old, I met Corky Calhoun at an Italian restautaunt on east Van Buren once. Can;t remember the name of the place but, Corky was gracious as all get out.

  • f**k Steve Nash and Santa Clara. now I can root for the suns again

    uofasteve

  • Suns fan here. Just not necessarily a NBA fan so it's low on the totem pole.

First thing I did when the trade was announced was to head over to azcentral is support of Sarver, which is not a popular position to take based on the thumbs down I received. Make no mistake, I'm still jilted over the whole Kerr thing but Sarver did what he had to do. In fact, I'm impressed that he didn't fold over the last two seasons with intentionally tanking and playing the game as it should be played. You play to win with what you have.

I approve this trade. Yes, it will hurt seeing Nash in a Lakers jersey.

We need bring in Gordon and I suspect it will cost us RoLo.

  • Word is that the Lakers are trying to go after Howard too............that would not make me happy at all. Not exactly a Lakers fan.

    Go Bulls.

  • Probably don't have to worry about Howard to the Lakers, as Stern will probably veto it. Even though I am a Lakers fan, I rarely watch NBA anymore because the whole league is rigged by the biggest Dbag ever David Stern. This year it was rigged for Lebron to get his championship. As you could see, they were allowed to foul at will and not get called. The Chris paul veto last year, crooked officials, rigged lotteries, even the Suns got burned by Stern a few years back when he suspended 2-3 starters for stepping one foot onto the court, thus costing them that series. I think it was Boston's turn to win that year. Point is the NBA is nearly unwatchable anymore due to the corruptness that exists in the league. I am just lucky I like one of the teams that seem to have been blessed with a David Stern Championship every few years.

Jerry, I'm a much bigger fan of the Wildcats than the Suns and in all honesty, other than the Wildcats fans who live there, I don't have much use for California. Nash is too old to do much anymore for the Suns and I'm not sure he not a little long in the tooth for the Lakers.

Colangelo is the father of all non collegiate sports in the Phoenix area. I used to get a big kick out of watching them at the "mad house on McDowell." I lived in Prescott when they were started and we planned trips to Phoenix around Suns and Phoenix Giants games. Jerry Colangelo and Frank Kush are the two men that belong to a very exclusive hall of fame for putting the Valley of the Sun on the sports map.

Your post was very much in tune with what I think. Strong upvote.

You think like a long time native.....Did you ever get a Ladmo Bag?

If you've got 51 minutes to burn, you can watch and listen to Colangelo here at a UofA speaking engagement:

  • UofA Steve has a sentiment that I really have to say was certainly my first thought when he came to Phoenix. That Santa Clara loss was really a university of Steve Nash loss. That's the only name I really remember from that day. I wanted to se anybody but him on the floor for Phoenix initially.

I do have to say that I have certainly seen games where Nash took the Suns on his back and willed them to win. He was an extraordinary competitor. I kind of hoped he would go to the Raptors and finish there. After all he is the biggest sports hero in Canada second only to William Shatner who effectively made safe space travel possible.

I will listen to the Colangelo tape. However, I have two daughters that had Ladmo bags and I played softball against him. I also won a prize for making the loudest noise at the state fair eating Laura Scudder potato chips. I saw Wayne Newton on stage with Lew King on the Lew King Rangers show on the same day. How's that for famous stuff?

  • You can also thank Colangelo...Bryan Colangelo... for insidiously blocking a trade from the Knicks to Phoenix for Landry Fields.

It wouldn't be an impossible leap to suggest that the Nash to LA trade was a backfire from the Colangelos. More on the link.

On July 3, Bryan Colangelo made one of the smartest moves he could have for the Raptors by signing New York Knicks shooting guard Landry Fields to a three-year, $20 million contract...

  • Not that this matters but Nash's line against us in '93 was average at best. 1-7 FG 0-3 3 pt 8-10 FT only because we fouled him a bunch at the end. 4 assists and 10 total pts.

As some of you may remember from a post I made about 5 months ago, I had the fortune of becoming friends with a teammate of Nash's on that SC team due to the fact that we have kids on the same baseball team this year. He was player of the game with 19 pts. He and two other guys combined for 70% of the points. Nash was only a freshman in that game.

Sorry to bring up old wounds, but I have become a bit of a history buff on that particular game due to my new friendship. He doesn't miss an opportunity to bring it up or wear SC gear in front of me. From what I understand though, Nash is a pretty good guy.

    CYCAT

  • Nash may have been a freshman, but he was a passing whiz.

CYCAT, you are a good guy to let them brag about the one year their star shined brightly and they were the first to knock off a team that highly seeded. Fortunately the Wildcats have had a few other good years as well. The greatest stories are when the undersized contender brings down the heavily favored champ. I think we are within a year or so of being back on the top of the pile and then others will tell their grandchildren about the time they knocked off Arizona because it won't happen very often.

Agree I hate stern he cost the suns a championship by kicking amare when nash was thrown into the boards and did not touch the floor. Ok fine then he will do the same to all teams no the next year game six Celtics and hawks there was a comparable fight and garrnett walked onto the floor was he suspended for game seven no. Stern has a hard on for Duncan and the big teams.

Yeah he knows that was a miracle to win that game. He even notes that we beat them by 30 in the NIT to start the season the next year. He was a 6'9" Dirk Nowitzki type who could shoot the three. He likes to say that Stokes just couldn't guard him on the perimeter. Apparently Lute switched Mills to him in the second half.

He is staunch supporter of Pac 12 and west coast basketball, so he is fun to talk to. In the meantime, I will just keep kicking his ass on the golf course and tennis courts.

I agree with you though rdb, that team was built to win a championship much like our future teams are being built. I expect that we will have most teams in the nation gunning to beat us very soon just like the old days. It is a pretty interesting perspective however to see how an upset like that has changed those guys lives.
