Pac-12 coaches cry foul

Poorly officiated games have plagued the conference for years. Finally, the Pac-12 is going to do something about it in a move driven by its basketball coaches.

  • I hate the fact we are no longer going the Thursday/Saturday thing for basketball. Made it very easy to plan things during basketball season!

True, but out of that breaking news the Thurs/Sat is what you're focusing on. I love ya CatsinCo, but you need to get your priorities straight. The Conference is finally figuring out ways to pull in the nation's top officiating crews so us fans don't have to sit through horribly officiated games anymore.

  • Gary: One thing you said was that one of your sources made a statement to the effect that a 3rd year star gets treated the same way as a walk on. When you've got that whistle around your neck isn't a foul a foul, irrespective of who you are?

  • Sure, technically, but there are unwritten rules in basketball and rule one is you don't let things happen like the 4 best players on the court (both teams) sitting on the bench in the first half with 2 and 3 fouls each, which is commonplace in the Pac-12.

I think the biggest concern, and it's something that started with Lute Olson as the biggest advocate, is Pac-10/12 teams are at a major disadvantage when it comes to Tournament play because when you hit the national stage more calls are let go to maintain fluidity and after playing 18 league games with absolutely zero consistency in the calls it takes 18 and 19 year olds time to adjust.

Put it this way, there were quotes I couldn't use from my source because they went into way much detail and some weren't exactly PG rated. Second, I will say that the source has zero affiliation with Arizona athletics.

To be specific rickyk, yes a foul is a foul and if a player gets hit on the shot, takes an elbow, etc it should be called. However, one thing my source pointed out is that if a player is not disrupted to the point where he can't keep making the play on balance then it shouldn't be called.

A perfect example is a reach in by the defender where the ball handler doesn't lose his dribble or have his momentum stopped. In short, the defender gained zero advantage on the play and oftentimes "the call" would actually negate the ball handler from blowing by his man and getting points. Instead, it's whistle, dead ball, take it out of bounds on the sideline.

  • “There’s no home court advantage, star players are treated like freshman walk-ons, it’s as if the home team gets the worst of it on purpose so fans can’t call the refs homers,” the source said.

The problem is with officiating culture, not specific to the PAC-12.

I specifically want to negate home court advantage - ideally EVERY game would played at neutral site. But UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD STAR PLAYERS BE TREATED ANY DIFFERENT THAN WALK-ONS. It has ruined the NBA... name the NBA star and I'll show you a guy who is 75% good and 25% protected by the officials. Dwayne Wade is a great example. The most over rated player ever, never gets a call against him. I have a close friend who is a referee and I am horrified at how they are trained. They are TOLD to keep games close and judged harshly for not doing so. If one team is up with by 30 with only seconds left to play, no way in hell will an official call a foul unless it's grossly obvious. That is just wrong. A good referee should never know the score of the game, should never know how many fouls any a player has, should never be interested in slowing down or speeding up the game - that is NOT their job yet they are trained to focus on those things FIRST. It's B.S.

ou have all actually seen this but think about it. It doesn't happen all that often but when one team gains a 10 or 12 foul advantage over the other, the refs step in and start calling make up calls to even out the fouls. They are trained specifically to do so. But the fact is that a Kelvin Sampson team might commit 40 more fouls than a Lute Olson team and IT SHOULD BE CALLED THAT WAY. But it isn't. Find the last college hoops game where the difference in fouls was more than 20 or 30%.

  • Any reason why we couldnt keep the TH/FRI format and still get rid of the poor officials?

I believe the article states it's due to tip times and the new tv deal so all pac12 games are televised.

  • Here's a piece from the Seattle Times from earlier in the month. It points to what Lute Olson's suggestion was to the director of officiating and how Kevin O'Neill may be the officials favorite:

  • I am of the opinion that one of the biggest problems that the Pac 10/12 has, is consistency in calls, from crew to crew. There are games where there are no calls, no blood no foul, and then the next game you have officials calling slight hand checks or moving picks out ten feet from the time line. There just seems to be a huge disparity between the good crews and the bad ones. The bottom line is that you have to let the players play and make plays. Let them play the game or it destroys the flow of the game, and from a marketing standpoint, limits the type of product that everyone is paying to see. I don't know of too many people who are buying tickets to see officials blow the whistle. It all fundamentally comes down to advantage/disadvantage.

  • Well, even in game there are times when there is no consistency. They will call tick tack fouls for 10 minutes, and then let even egregious calls by later in the game.

  • All I can say is, IT'S ABOUT TIME! It would be horrific for the nation to see what we've been dealing with over the years, and downright embarrassing.
