Short Rotation

  • I actually think that the injuries may do our young guards some good. I felt with the heavy rotation they were always relying on someone else to make a big play. With a smaller rotation it forces them to step up.

  • It also lets them just play instead of worry about being yanked on their first mistake.

  • this only works if the guys want it, since they know that Miller can't take them out there is always the potential to loaf it.

  • We are still deep enough to rotate players and there are plenty of coaching opportunities.

I totally agree that every extra minute Chol, Johnson and Turner are on the floor we are getting better - almost as if they are already winning more games next year because of those minutes.

  • the lack of depth worked against CSM and the Wildcats in Miller's first year since he didn't have anyone he could use to sub for Jamelle Horne. Later, when he got Jesse Perry, he was able to pull Jamelle in an attempt to light a fire under his ass... later he just started Perry instead of Jamelle. Hopefully the guys who are left on the roster this year can be self-motivated. If that's the case, this can work in our favor. If not, we'll be in trouble.

  • A shorter rotation is almost always better for a team. For years Lute ran with an 8 man rotation. Our title team was basically a 7 man rotation. A 10 man rotation works well when most of the team is avg such as last year. We need to get more minutes for our top players and stop yanking them so quickly.

The 1997 team had a lot of star power on it though... which is in stark contrast to what we have this year. That team had guys like Michael Bibby, Jason Terry, Michael Dickerson, and Miles Simon who didn't really need guys to push them in practice. Those guys were immensely talented and self-movitaved so they were able to really play well without the coach having to use the fear of being benched as a motivational factor. This year's team doesn't have anywhere near the same level of talent that team had... so CSM really would benefit from having a deeper/more-capable bench to use to improve competition in practice and keep players battling with one another for a larger portion of the pie. The deeper bench could also lead to increased player development, which we all know this year's team (with heavy reliance on freshmen) could really benefit from.

  • A strong case can be made for short and deep player rotations. Miller's instinct is to go with a deep rotation, and quite frankly that's the one I prefer in the college game because so many players are inconsistent from game to game.

I do think all the guys who are still standing for Arizona are "hungry" so I don't expect anyone to loaf or go easy because no one is behind them in the rotation.

Miller prefers it because he's never had stars to coach. Ina naother year, I don't see how you won't want Johnson, Turner and Chol on the foor for 35 minuts each. They could all be 1st team all conference players or at least playing at that level by the end of their sophomore years.

If you have Momo, Blav, Mayes & Fogg .... you rotate. If you have Turner and Johnson (or Simon and Bibby) you don't need to as much. Of course if you have Terry backing them up then maybe you do.....Makes my head hurt to realize how incredible some past teams have been.

Fair point, but here's next year's roster:

    Josiah Turner
    Nick Johnson
    Jordin Mayes
    Gabe York

    Solomon Hill
    Kevin Parrom
    Brandon Ashley
    Grant Jerrett
    Angelo Chol

    Kaleb Tarczewski
    Kyryl Natyazhko

Outside of K-Nat, who of these players is going to ride the pine if 3-4 guys are getting 35 minutes a night. My guess is this season is the outlier under Miller and next year we move back to everyone playing between 25-30 minutes. The one exception could be Turner at the point because he's the only "pure" point guard on the roster. I can also see Hill getting 30 plus minutes because he'll be a first team Pac-12 returner. After that, though, playing time looks wide open to me.

I don't buy this for the simple reason that Miller almost never rides the hot hand. He pulls guys based on a set rotation and rarely if ever leaves guys in who are playing well.

Miller likes a deep team so he can get all out defensive effort. At this pace Perry and Hill are going to break down.

My opinion is that we're gonig to go back to a 9-10 man rotation and one of the 3 freshman bigs is not going to be ready to contribute right away. I think they'll all be good down the road... but 1 of the 3 won't be ready right away. Also... I'm thinking Gabe York is going to be a beast.

Looking at this roster for next season... it would really be nice to sign some guys who are 6'5 or 6'6... KP and Solo are going to be seniors next year. It would be nice to have a freshman wing play with them for one year while learning Miller's system. I really think it helps speed up player development if newbs are able to learn from plays and the coach... as opposed to just learning from the coach.

Jabari Bird, Aaron Gordon, and Stephen Domingo, amongst others are the main priority for CSM in the class of 2013. They are going hard after the sf/sg type players to replace hill and parrom.

  • I know! It would be awesome to get 2 of those guys. Heck... I wouldn't doubt it if CSM is able to haul in all 3 of 'em! He's one of the best recruiters out there! But they're gonna be arriving on campus AFTER Solo and KP are done playing. Which was basically my point... its nice to get them on the roster while there are upper-classmen at their position to kinda show them the ropes. I know they can learn from the coach... but its better to learn from the coach AND other players who play your same position.

ahhhh, I get what you're saying. Yea it would be nice to get some of those type players to learn from hill and parrom, but we have to trust in what CSM is doing. He has a plan and filled the spots with what he felt would best suit the team. I think our team in 2013 will be preseason top 5, depending on who is still around. (Fingers crossed, everyone)

  • I love Gordon and Bird, but for some reason I want Domingo more than all of them. His stroke is as pure as it gets.

    Beermancats

  • Riding the HOT HAND. Mixed bag as I see it. How many times have you seen him pull a player when they are hot. I do not understand that philosophy. It's like asking your boxer to pull his punches while he has his opponent against the rings and ready to do a 10 count. However, that said he may not have much of choice of leaving players in longer with a shorter bench that we have. that in itself is a plus ( I hope) as players will stay in longer and get a better feel for the floor and the game. Take a look at past times that Lute has played his best payers for longer periods of time then Miller ever has. It is of course a difference of how to play the game. I Like both but wish there was a little more in between with Miller. Sure rotate when you can....but leave the hot player in until he looks like he needs to be pulled.

  • There is a chance KP gets his 5th year and in that case it would be perfect to mix in a couple of 6'5, 6'6 freshman wings with him in 2013.

That would be an optimal scenario.

Teach the freshmen some toughness. I like it.

  • I'm with Ben J in that the 9-10 player rotation will be back next season. Way too much talent to sit anyone on the bench. Besides, the Arizona players "love" the rotation because everyone plays, everyone fills a role and it's the reason why team chemistry has been incredible at U of A under Miller.

I also agree with Liver in that the focus to have guys go all out on defense is a big reason for the substitution pattern (in general).
