The Appologists' Thread: I Want To Read All About Your Excuses.

  • The 2013 class will SUCK because of tonight. AZ is currently banking on their future with next season's "#1 recruiting class".

If they are a bust....then Miller is not only a poor evaluator of talent but a poor evaluator of his coaching ability and he will need to go to Maryland after all.

    Fucking Bucknell.....BUCK 'FUCKING' NELL!!!

It's Seattle Pacific all over again.

    Arrrrrggghh!!!!

  • Make the NIT, give up half your salary; lose the first game AT HOME to Bucknell, give up the other half. For TWO MILLION DOLLARS we should be getting more for itrant

  • tonights game was pretty tough to watch. no rhythm offensively and no transition game to speak of. The offense was beyond terrible. This was definitely the worst arizona wildcat basketball team i've ever seen. The team that went 16-15 a couple of years ago (also a miller-coached team) was better than this bunch. This team seemed unprepared on the offensive end of the court all year. We've gotta be the only undersized team to ever play a slowed down pace. Seems ridiculous. We were WAY more talented than Bucknell was tonight. You could see it all game long. Our guys were stronger, faster, quicker, more athletic. But they won. They were the better team. We had the better collection of basketball players but played a terrible brand of basketball. Its so disappointing.

    Bear Down Arizona

  • wOW. We haven't improved from the Pacific to the Bucknell game. Actually we got worse

    Mrzipityduda

  • I agree with Ben. I don't believe I've seen an outlet pass off a defensive rebound all year. The only way we play uptempo is by dribbling the length of the court. When I sent my kid to Lute's and even Fred Snowden's camp he went back into YMCA ball looking to pass the ball up the court to an open man.

On the other hand, maybe this year is the equivalent of Lute's 4th season when we lost at home to UTEP in the tourney. The ending sure feels about the same.

I was thinking some of these same thoughts as I left McKale tonight. That Milers first team was better than this one.

But I don't think we had more talent than Bucknell tonight.

They covered our transiston well. If you don't have an inside presence then the defense can just clog the middle to prevent us from driving. We have become THAT predictable.

They. Shot from the FT line better than we did. They had more size than we did. They had more balance than we did.

  • well... no being an apologist I assume that I should not participate.

If tonight and the ASU game are not enough to convince you that Miller might not actually perfect, then I'm not certain what could.

  • I'm sure I have been branded an apologist, but I don't ever recall even insinuating Miller was perfect. But whatever... that was probably just sarcasm.

You guys can come after us all you want but it isn't going to make those of us you're deemed "apologists" want to jump off a bridge with you, stop supporting the program, or AHEM... Fire the coach.

I don't think you're going to hear any "excuses" from me or any other apologist. Simply put, the Cats looked like a team that didn't really want to be there in the NIT. Not an excuse, just an observation. Assign blame wherever you want. Fault lies with pretty much everyone, and I don't think Miller would dispute that.

I wish I could somehow dispel the perception that seems to be prevalent that those of us you consider apologists don't have frustration or even anger about this season, or otherwise help you to see that those of us who don't want to fire Miller or whatever else has been suggested aren't even trying to make excuses (rather just stating the obvious... some things are outside the realm of complete control). Nor do we think Miller is perfect, nor are we sniffing Miller's jock or any of the other insulting things that have been said.

I am frustrated. I do have higher standards than this year for Arizona basketball. I know Miller does too. I just refuse to start down the road towards becoming a whiny spoiled fan who cannot see reality like the annoying JayHawk fans out here.

With that, I am done arguing this.

    Go Josh, go Memphis.

    Bear Down.

is there something wrong with being whiny?

Look, I admit that I am a horrible sport. My parents failed society miserably when it comes to sportsmanship.

But just t be clear, I think Miller needs some coaching himself, some guidance and some wisdom, but on the whole he's a terrific coach and we are lucky to have him.

I would write into the coaches contract however, that he could be fired for missing the NCAA tourney. That has to be a priority at AZ.

I feel the same way. Sean, if nothing else, needs a small amount alter-ego. he needs to be alittle more flexible in his approach to .....well....being flexible. I sure hope his attirude osnt one that syas: MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAYIf he was smart he'd sit down with Lute and a few others and ask. What do you see that I did wrong?
Is he humble enough to do that or are we destined to have a man made of hardened steel?

Well, F*cking Bucknell won the Patriot League regular season ahead of Lehigh which beat Duke last night in the dance that we all are depressed for missing. So one guy is a hall of fame coach and the other is a poor evaluator of talent + has poor coaching abilities. Wait, I might have that backwards. Actually, maybe I'm talking about Lute or Roy Williams or Bill Self?

So, what am I getting at? Very simple. In my opinion, it is far too early to throw Sean Miller under the bus just because he barely missed guiding us to the NCAA's. From the drive I see in him, my belief that he will figure out what it takes given more time, and the apparent prerequisite of suffering disappointments before greatness is found, I still firmly believe that Sean Miller is the right coach to bring Arizona back to the top in basketball.

    Up vote!!!!!

There might be some misinterpretation from my comments recently that Miller will not change from his man-to-man defense, or make any defensive adjustments during games. While that is true, don't misinterpret this by meaning that Miller makes no adjustments on the offensive side of the ball. He does, literally from game to game, and in my opinion is one of the absolute best on designing plays to get open looks at any point in the game.

Sure, Miller has a lot to learn as a head coach (8 years) when you compare him to a hall of famer like Lute Olson (40+ years). Still, I like Arizona's situation moving forward...a lot.

  • Rereading these, the frustration is probably a very good thing. It says we know we should be better.

    We will be.

On being whiny, believe me, you've got nothing on the Kansas fans I alluded to earlier. They are flat out the most whiny, self-important bunch I have ever listened to.

As far as your NCAA clause for the coaching contract goes, it really is in the contract (kind of). I mean, Bryne COULD fire Miller tomorrow. I don't know that writing that in would change much. It's still at the AD's discretion regardless.

If we fired Miller I am sure he has some financial guarantees... that is what I would seek to eliminate agins on ly on the condition of failing to make the NCAA tournament. There's like 72 teams now.....we're Arizona, there is no excuse.

But I do think we are all hopeful and expect that this year was an aberration...

I know it's more of a hypothetical, but my only problem with that would be that it would put Arizona at a competitive disadvantage when it comes to dealing with coach hiring and retention.

It really just makes it all the more important not to hire a coach who is just in it for the money, or one who even lets the thought cross his mind "oh well, didn't make the tournament... but I'll still get X million if I get fired."

Thankfully, I think we have the right guy.
