I think there are points on both side to the Elite argument. In another thread on another broad in a galaxy far, far away, I wrote that I thought you could not be elite until two different coaches had performed at an elite level for sustained periods.
NOBODY groups us with Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky, Kansas or UCLA - nor should they. If pointing out history makes us Elite, it catapults all of them off the planet. Even the youngest member of that group (UCLA) had a 30 year head start on us wining championships.
IMO, we should be grouped with UConn, Michigan State, Syracuse, Florida, maybe Ohio State now, Louisville and I am probably forgetting a few. Most of those schools have multiple National Championships. We may have outperformed them for the 80's and 90's but in the past decade, UConn, Syracuse, Florida and Ohio State have zoomed past us.
Also what do you do with Indiana? That's the only dynasty that has ever totally fallen from grace in BB. Sure, Kansas or UCLA or Kentucky have had rough patches but they haven't been relevant for the better part of two decades. "What up, Knight"? Still it's hard not to say they were one of the Elite programs of all time, because they were.
I do think there are some over-hyped pretenders out there too that we should not be compared to or grouped with that I think we often are; Georgetown is #1. When is that publicity BS machine going end? Maryland never got over the hump. Texas, maybe Barnes is where Lute was after his first final four, I can see them being excellent for a long time. Oklahoma State is/has always been over rated. Arkansas was good for about 5 minutes but the SI book on college hoops is plastered with pictures and articles about Nolan Richardson (who left in disgrace, right?). Stanford under Monty - great program, always rooted for them but damn, how did they not ever get to a final four? Michigan - the fab five were a joke.
I do think that Miller has real shot at doing something special here - being the second highly successful coach with a long tenure at AZ. A NC or even a few final fours will catapult us back to knocking on the door of the truly 'elite' schools - but we have a ways to go.
