UW exposes UA's deficiencies

Arizona's lack of size on the wing and overall depth plays right into Washington's hands.

  • I'm not sure I agree with the depth issue as Washington was basically a 6 man team and some minutes to a 7 man team...the minutes played bare this out...

The depth of each team was the same...

But as pointed out in this well done article the real issues was the speed, size and lets face it athletic ability of UW was just superior...

Next year we will have the talent to not only hang with UW but probably beat them...just not there right now....

  • You're right, Washington just has more firepower right now.

As well as they have developed, several of Arizona's role players have had to play significant minutes.

  • As stated earlier...we will beat them and it won't be close ! ! ! !

  • Washington had seven players play 15+ minutes, Cats had seven play 18+ minutes. The difference is UW had three other players combine for 11 minutes.

Also, the Cats had to fight it out on Thurs night, while UW rested its rotation players a lot against ASU. The biggest issue is not depth, but the lack of true wings to match-up with the UW size.

True, and C.J. Wilcox is better than any player on Arizona's bench (no disrespect). The guy killed Arizona in last season's Pac-12 title game and his 11 points off the bench - I think all in the second half - really helped UW maintain momentum despite foul trouble to Ross and Gaddy.

Personally, I'm still smarting over the ridiculous no call on the N'Diaye travel at half court that resulted in a dunk. Last time I checked you still can't pass the ball to yourself on any level (high school, college, NBA). Heck, even the Euros don't allow players in their leagues to pass the ball to themselves.

What that ref was thinking I'll never know. Obviously, he must have thought N'Diaye protected his dribble by keeping his top hand over the ball. However, he missed N'Diaye catching the loose ball with two hands, then throwing it 7-10 feet over the U of A player, then catching it, taking three steps before dribbling again (a second travel that wasn't called), and then dunking.

Granted, if it was Wroten or Ross I could see the official thinking such a wildly athletic player might be capable of making an athletic save. However, when it's the "center" of a team, I'm sorry, there's just no way in hell a reasonable human being could allow that double-travel to have ocurred.

  • On the subject of traveling Gary, have you noticed how college ball has really started to mimic the NBA on how many steps are allowed? It used to be about one and a half and now it seems like its almost up to 3.

Agreed. I watched the Ohio State/Michigan game tonight and there were several occasions where guys seemed to be getting away with all kinds of stuff with the ball in their hands. On one play, Sullinger faked right, took one dribble, drew contact on a half step, then created separation with two big steps before getting off the shot. Not only did they not call traveling, the gave him the foul call. I was laughing.

As bad as it is in the Pac-12, it's really bad everywhere. Personally, I think the game is "too fast" for these college-level referees. Someone needs to step in and reorganize how these guys are positioned on the floor because the traditional angles with one ref on the baseline, one at halfcourt on one side and the other at the 3-Point line extended on the other side doesn't seem to allow them to see the floor with the bigger bodies and speed.

In the UW/UA game, too many times it seemed like the refs would first blow the whistle and then try and figure out what the call would be rather than seeing the foul and then blowing the whistle.

  • 2 spot-on posts Gary. I could not believe the travel no-call either. And honestly, that was a 4 pt swing that the Cats never recovered from.

Whoever is the head of PAC-12 officiating should be issuing a statement this week about that terrible no-call.

What an embarrassment to our conference that was. Not to mention the blow-the-whistle-then-figure-it-out stuff that you mentioned as well.

Confusion defines PAC-12 officiating. It happens every year, and puts our teams at a disadvantage in the tournament thanks to the wildly inconsistent calls.

  • Excellent posts. I would add that the conference officials seem to call a lot of clean blocks by Chol fouls. A coach will tell you that if you establish position and keep your hands high-don't swing down in a block attempt it is not a foul-yet refs often give that call to the offensive player. To me it has seemed that a lot of Chol's foul trouble has been bogus. But Gary made the telling point about the speed and size of elite college players. Refferreeing basketball is extremely difficult even if it's just men's leauge. Don't know the answer. Reffing is an inherent weakness in the game.

  • My biggest worry was the refs being influenced by the crowd. In the first half it was apparent by the non-traveling call but I think the calls were pretty even in the second half. Washingtons depth was the difference in the end.

Shame on you Dazzy, how dare you insinuate that a Pac 12 ref is reasonable much less a human being.

Next you're going to tell me you've met a lil forker with class.

  • Exposed?? Only because we had 2 players out. Oh yeah..the only exposure I saw was the BS lac of calls from the mugging !!!

    Mrzipityduda

  • Unfortunately there seems to be one Forker with class. PHIL. Seriously...the only one

    Mrzipityduda

  • Yep. That's what they exposed. Our big and physical wings had to turn themselves into under-sized post players. UW exposed our lack of size... and with the players playing out of position, they exposed our lack of strength and physical presence on the wings. If Kyryl was a decent big-man, we'd be playing Solo at the 3. He would have changed the way the UW wings were able to attack our defense. Since K-nat sucks... UW was able to expose our front-line as being small and was able to expose our wings as actually being combo guards. But I guess those are the breaks. We're actually having a pretty decent year for having such a ridiculously small team.

  • Expose and exploit are two different words.

Was it actually a secret we are very weak on the baseline?

1-3-1 with Johnson running the baseline? It would be worth a try, IMO.

Maybe for 1 or 2 posessions per game. Just to throw the other team off for a minute and get a quick turnover due to the confusion. But other than that... CSM is fully Man to Man.
