Xavier guard may transfer

Xavier's Mark Lyons would consider the Wildcats if he transfers from the Muskateer program.

  • Isnt he a troubled kid? Domwe want an other troubled kid??? Or was it an other guard from X?

  • It's up to fans to decide, but unfortunately fans always tend to lean toward the negative.

He played for three high schools including South Kent and Brewster Academy. Before his freshman season began at Xavier, the NCAA stepped in with new eligibility rules and declared him only a partial qualifier that resulted in him redshirting as a freshman.

He's sprained his ankle on several occassions at Xavier, but was still named to the A-10's all freshman team in his redshirt freshman season. Was involved in the Xavier-Cincy fight (who wasn't that night) that Tu Holloway started. Gained national attention, though, because he was one of the guys on the podium at the post game presser talking what the national media dubbed as "gangsta" talk.

By all accounts he's fine, but of course we have some complete idiots that call Kevin Parrom the "dirtiest player ever" so I'm sure some will paint Lyons as a problem child.

  • Lotsof hurdle to jump first. Must graduate this summer from Xavier. Must qualify for grad school at aRizona in a program Xavier does not have and must decide to stay in school at Arizona. We should know by July or August.

Mark Lyons is definitely not playing for Xavier next season. Lets hope he can graduate and play his last season for the coach that initially recruited and signed him.

  • Man this could be great, a backcourt of him and KP would be almost impossible for a team to bring the ball up the court on.

  • NJ can be a monster on the defensive end when he wants to be as well. I expect he'll improve a ton this off-season. But yeah... the defensive preassure that we'll be able to put on teams next season with Mark Lyons in the mix could be really impressive. Keeping my fingers crossed that we get this one.

Dirtier than Edgerson?! Wow. Who said that?

  • I just remember having to defend Kevin Parrom from those that went overboard after he fouled ASU's Ty Abbott a few years back. I wouldn't say Edgerson was dirty either. Back in his day before everyone turned into a bunch of wimps in this country players were actually able to make contact with other players on the basketball court. Now, you can't even pivot and make a basketball move without fear of accidentally grazing an opponent with your elbow and getting a flagrant 1.

    A fine point.

I was kidding about Edgerson and the Parrom thing has totally been disproven by years of very few fouls and no intentionals that I can recall in the past two.

Interesting to me, I don't think the game is actually played any more or less physical, but it is definitely called differently. I.e. is there noticeable difference between say the Wear twins and Sean Rooks in physicality?

I just think in todays game, Rooks would foul out more and likely rotate in and out much more for fewer overall minutes.

  • Gary: Point taken; but, back in the day long before your "back in the day" the rules were that you could not touch an offensive player with the ball when on defense. That has morphed quite a bit over time. My friend, who I've written about on here a couple times as my old radio show pilot, also officiated college and high school games in the midwest before being assigned to Arizona for his day work. I asked him once, "Lee would you say you changed the way you called games over the years?" His answer was almost like a rote expression of a party line: "We were told, as much as possible you let the players determine the outcome of the game." Although he did finally agree that back when he played you couldn't get away with the hand checks and stuff that are now common.

  • I agree guys. I'm definitely not advocating New York Knicks circa 1990's basketball, but I do like to see a little physicality out there too. IMO, the new elbow rule has introduced an element of soccer (faking injuries) into the game of college basketball and that seriously distrubs me. I hate the clock having to be stopped and watching the officials huddle around a television everytime someone gets struck in the head by accident.

I'm sure your friend can attest to this, but a good official knows right off the bat if a foul was malicious or not because they've been watching the action all game and are paying attention to any players who might be getting a tad hot-headed or frustrated.
