back from the edge.....

  • JC kids are as much a coin toss. There are reasjons they are JC and not in a four year school. As far as recruiting classes the first one us better than you give credit krylwas a bust but that happens Williams was great Momo was on a betterthan people think and if it was Miller not giving love or if it really was family you can not say he was a bust. Hill is a solid player and agree with what he will be remembered as. Parrom you miss until he was shot he was having the best off season than any other player and he would have probably been the difference in several games. Mark my words he will be the go to next year as long as he is healthy. Johnson is better than last year personally he feels more like a point guard he slashes well has a bit of a shot he needs to work on good handles better than some of Lutes points and can pass. Also he has more athleticism than Zona has had since Jefferson. Chol will be amazing I see him as a Jordan Hill type of player. This recruiting class can be compared with Lutes first class where two people transferred after the first season. Miller is actually at the same place as Lute at the same time in his career as far as transferrs . Looking at the Pack 12

On top of that there are 1,367 other reasons we haven't been the same and 1,366 of them have nothing at all to do with Williams. Cue: The Smithereens "Only a memory"

I'm not writing Miller off.... just not giving him any slack. We cannot fail to make the NCAA tournament. We cannot lose to RPI #251 again.

    WK,

I'm going to hold you to that. My over/under on seeing a "Fire Miller" thread before the end of the year says the smart money is on the under.

(Edited: Take the Over if it was rephrased to say amount of times 3 ≥)

#251 played out of their minds that day. It was a good game, as any rivalry match-up should be. That game actually has me considering asking for a cross-collaboration with both respective schools athletic depts. This is so to ensure that #251 scheduling leads to at least a #151 RPI and so that visiting teams have to account for both Arizona schools. It really was that close, and we got jobbed with ASU's basketball philosophy.

The best part about this thread is the chance to revisit The Smithereens on YouTube (though BlkMtn's post was pretty amusing). Since this post is about being "back from the edge", I'll counter with something from the same era...Peter Murphy.

  • Why you guys even bothering? That's what I don't get. shrug

Wine's post's nothing but pure comedy. Nothing more then a good laugh and NEVER to be taken seriously. Great job wine, you outdid yourself in this one. Too bad you took a step back.

  • Tewa,

I'm pretty sure it is the comedic factor that get's the WK threads going.

I was...thisclose....to posting a "here wego" Bud Light video when this post came out yesterday morning and following it up with "First!!!".

I don't think any of these guys missed 2 NCAA tournaments in three years....and don't believe any of them have missed one after three years with the program they are with now.

Ok, lets blow this comment out of the water. Duke and Coach K started pretty miserably in his first three seasons. After going 17-13 in his first season at Duke (missing the dance), you would think the great Mike K would be off to the races, but no. He went 10-17 and 11-17 in season 2 & 3 missing the tourney in all three season. But you also said after their first three seasons right? Wrong again Coach K again missed in '95 and should have been left out in '96 with an 18-13 record but Duke is Duke and 18 wins gets them in.

Let's take a look at Calhoun. He, like Mike missed the tourney his first three seasons. Then missed it again in years 7, 10 and 20. And probably should have been left out this season too despite being the defending National champs.

Williams missed it in both his first years at KS and UNC...two of the all time great programs that never miss the tourney, right?

Self hasn't missed it at KS but he took over a program that was firing on all cylinders.

What is being said is that Miller is no worse than some of the greatest coaches in college basketball when comparing the first three years. And yes they had some hiccups along the way even after their programs were up and running. I am sure I could dig up some rpi #251 terrible losses in there too and quite few transfers and poorly evaluated talent if I had the time.

Point is, nobody is perfect. If you have played sports at a competitive level, which WK you claim to have done, you should know that you lose games you shouldn't, you have bad seasons once in awhile, you can't control injuries and you make mistakes on talent. If you don't know this then I would question your true knowledge of how sports and teams work.

Regardless, of your sports background, considering what the above coaches were able to achieve after what you yourself deem as unacceptable starts, don't you think it would worth it to UA BB to give it another year or two to see how our investment pans out? It certainly panned out for Duke, UConn and UNC. If our program is as great as you (WK) expect it to be then yes we too will return to that prominence in time.

  • Comparing Lute to Miller is like comparing Apples to Pears. Sure they are kind of similar, but not really.

Lute certainly had big time recruits transfer out. Tait, one of his early guards, went to Clemson and was an NBA player. Edtrick Bohanan had the longest NBA career of the five players he came in with (Blair, Geary, McLean and Williams). Ruben Douglas led the nation in scoring. Bynum played in the Final Four and NBA.

As for this past season, I will give WK this, the loss to Bucknell and ASU were among the worst losses of the past 25 years, but had Arizona scheduled and LOST to a New Mexico and a UNLV (or comparable teams) instead of beating Oakland and Bryant, they would likely have been in. Had the Pac-12 actually won a few in non conf, the Cats probably get in with 23 wins.

I never claimed Rogers was the second coming, just that he was superior to Shakur in all aspects of the game and superior o Salim on defense... and he was.

OK, I exaggerated about the first part.

However, your limited BB IQ and knowledge is now showing. He wasn't superior to just about anyone in the rotation of the years you mention. As much as I thought Shakur was not so great, he was clearly head and shoulders above the head case CR.

And he truly wasn't a better defender than Salim, who as an all conference player was an outstanding defender.

You always mixed up CR's flailing around with his arms as "good defense."

If we could have bought CR for what he was worth and sold him for what he thought he was worth, we'd both be millionaires. But if I could sell him for what you think he was worth, I'd still be a wealthy person.

Actually they all did. I did the research and can't find more than 3 coaches who have had a better 1st 8 years as a head coach than Miller.

  • I have an idea. Let's start a topic about basketball instead of about wineknow's delicate psyche.

Either that, or we should be charging him $300. an hour consultation fees.
