why pull b lav out?

  • I am confused. Arizona is greatly struggling for offensive points.

B Lav just drains his second 3 pointer and is clearly feeling it...

And immediately draining the 3 he is pulled and the team struggles....

Big reason UCLA's so called defensive was so tough and especially inside is because they had no fear of our shooters so they pack their bigs inside and say fine throw it out to a shooter....

  • I'm confounded by that also. I've brought up the same point regarding B-Lav a couple of games ago.

Miller has previously mentioned that B-Lav is a deadly 3 point shooter in practices yet, Miller gives him a very short leash during game minutes.

  • Miller did this same thing against Washington a few years ago, subs come in play great and he goes right back to the starters. He is one of those coaches who doesn't adjust his substitution pasterns at all. He also doesn't adjust his play style to fit his players strengths.

  • i believe that Miller substitutes more based on defense. maybe matchups or effort.
i agree that pulling BLAV was early. he did try him again in the 2nd half but he couldnt get open for a shot.

  • I made the same comment in Gary's thread, and I agree with all here. It seems Miller has his ways and it's tough to break those patterns with him. Last night Brendon needed to keep playing.

  • ???????????????????? same here.

  • Blav, after four years, has brought value, although limited, to this team as a one who can come off the bench, make a few shots, not lose the ball or make many mistakes on offense.

    On defense it's another story.

Good kid, paid his dues, loyal, all that stuff. But dont get confused.

He is playing at his peak minutes and beyond right now, but only because JT and Mayes have not developed as quickly.

so against a crappy as hell offensice team, BLAV should have been playing a lot of minutes by your own words... Blav isn't as bad on defense as you like to think he is.

  • To Lavender's credit, I think he's really improved on defense and might be Arizona's best off-ball defender. However, he still lacks the lateral quickness to be an elite defender, but I do think he's busted his tail be get better over his four years.

I can't disagree about not keeping Lav in when he was hot, but I'm sure Miller had his reasons. It wasn't addressed post game though.

  • Not sure if Miller would use this question...but go on Facebook and ask it!!!

I wont argue that Blav has improved. He clearly has. As Gary has noted, I will agree that some modest improvement has been made on defense too.

His shooting percentage is much higher so far this year contrasting previous years.

Against UCLA he played 3 minutes more than his season average.

UCLA is indeed a horrible team, but apparently not against us. Not having heard an explanation, I surmise that the reason he didn't play more had to do with matchups and defense. Plus he is in a rotation of six guys playing the 2-3 position.

  • While he isn't as bad defensively as some think, he isn't as good as the rest of you think either. Average defender at best and everyone knows its defense that gets you PT.

Doesn't matter if you did shoot 3/5 on 3's (BLav) while the rest of the team shot 2/27 over the weekend. Wait, why did he get pulled again?? shrug

what's funny is this team only lacks interior defense. We are doing amazing at holding teams to low shooting percentages. what we lack is offense! We need someone who can shoot and can score. Lavender spreads the defense and opens up lanes for the rest of the team on offense no matter how much people like to bag on him. the other coaches and players know he can shoot.

  • What I find interesting is Lavender might be the most popular guy amongst his teammates. Everyone loves Lavender and when he's in the bench is always rooting him on hard.

Match ups definitely impact playing time, plus everyone knows that role players have shorter leashes than starters. Hence, a key mistake by Lav might get him pulled right away while some like Fogg could go through a few mistakes before it's clear that his head is off and he needs to come out.

As a coach, I would never take out a hot hand, but Miller has proven for years he knows what he's doing.

He's got a nice stroke and a good shot, i think everyone knows that. He seems like a good guy and I wasn't bagging on the kid. I was equally dumbfounded as to why he was pulled under those circumstances. Like Gary says though, CSM been doing this for a long time now so who am I to question his coaching. If we're counting on BLav to score for AZ though, god help us...

I agree on the interior D. Unfortunately it may be something that rears its ugly head all season long. The bigs of 2012 cant get here soon enough.
